I have no idea how much they spent, but no one else does, either.

The $30 million figure came from that notable college football expert known anonymously as "sliced bread" on the internet. Whoever the guy is, he has to be laughing his butt off, because everyone bought what he was selling.

Again, no one really knows what they spent, but it probably isn't a good idea to put much stock into what "sliced bread" was selling.

Many people don’t analyze the difference between “generational wealth” and “being rich”.

Most entities investing heavily in the NIL pool seem To be more On the wealthy side I would say.

But this NIL stuff came so fast and in conjunction with the transfer portal, combined with it having many parameters spelled out, it’s like the wild-wild west right now.

The NIL NEEDS SERIOUS REVAMPING.

1. High School kids should have caps!
2. Schools should have Caps!
3. I believe a certain % of that cap should go to the entire team and split evenly amongst the other players that do not have NIL endorsements. Ie. “Practice Squad Guys”, without them, the NIL SUPERSTARS cannot get live looks and improve their game and stock price.

* maybe take 10-20% of the cap and give the entire locker room a check off the top & split evenly.

OTHERWISE, this would be like NFL bench guys or practice squads working for free, you think that would happen or be fair? NO!!!

4. And if we are going down this rabbit hole and putting NIL money on guys that may have peaked physically in HS, or may have played in crappy competition. Ie. 5-stars that flake out in college.

** then, I think there should be some eventual performance goals to reach to keep them hungry, versus being an 18-yo all of Sudden making $200-500k year and living the dream & losing site of the long term.

Think of the coaching contracts where they get bonuses for making the playoffs or winning the conference or a bowl game win etc…

Need to hold these guys accountable.

That's just the most obvious lie of all time. Not even a good attempt at lying.

I think a lot of these figures said by some are incredibly inflated.

Probably

ich people are rich because they’re good with money. They’re not throwing $1 million at 1 recruit that won’t provide that return through advertising.

So you think they'd spend tens of millions on the football coach but won't spend millions on the players? The return on both is the same.

no chance that is accurate

1mill is way to low I am sure he was kept out of the loop on the true numbers. However the NIL numbers thrown by the media are incredibly inflated.

Jimbo is still trying to protect his image as a master recruiter here and not admit he paid for a bunch of players.

Excellent point

Furthermore: this article completely erases that "$1 million across all sports" bullshite.

In first two years of NIL compensation, Texas A&M athletes have earned more than $10M

quote:

In the second year of legalized name, image and likeness compensation, Texas A&M athletes more than doubled their revenue on NIL deals. In total, Aggie athletes pocketed $8,547,477.96 in NIL compensation from Aug. 1, 2022 to June 11, 2023, according to university-tracked information obtained by The Eagle through an open records request. Aggie athletes made $4,173,656.82 in the first year of legalized NIL compensation, according to a separate open records request filed with the university that contained a date range from June 1, 2021 to Aug. 1, 2023.

These deals are for sure inflated out the arse but no chance these guys are averaging out 10-20k maybe in its first year

Ryan Day said you need $13M a year to be competitive. I'm sure Oregon is way ahead of that and who knows what A&M spent on that first class.

If you are going to lie, at least make it somewhat believable.

NCAA would get sued and lose in court. Even pro leagues don’t have caps on what a player can earn through endorsement deals

quote:

3. I believe a certain % of that cap should go to the entire team and split evenly amongst the other players that do not have NIL endorsements. Ie. “Practice Squad Guys”, without them, the NIL SUPERSTARS cannot get live looks and improve their game and stock price.
Again, they’d get sued and lose in court. A lot of players make NIL money from putting on youth camps, especially in sports like baseball or basketball. Why are they going to be forced to share the money they made from making appearances with teammates who sat at home?

quote:

OTHERWISE, this would be like NFL bench guys or practice squads working for free, you think that would happen or be fair? NO!!!
The bench players still have a scholarship

Think of the coaching contracts where they get bonuses for making the playoffs or winning the conference or a bowl game win etc…

The coaches are also under contract and paid by the school. Raising Cane’s doesn’t give Brian Kelly a bonus for winning games. He’s just a lot more marketable (and can command bigger endorsement deals) with greater levels of success

That seems wrong

I believe him as he has no reason to lie at this point.

Other than to try to salvage his reputation and counter the perception that he was the guy who spent millions of dollars getting one of the best recruiting classes ever and still couldn't win anything significant.

Okay, if you think caps are a good idea then let’s apply them to the place where there has been uncontrolled and often reckless spending for years,…..head coach’s salaries.

However, we have seen the most obvious kind of correction for head coach salaries without caps - Jimbo Fisher is the prime example.

Let this play out with the NIL pay for players.
