They also had years of school and training on the subject
If you want to become an agent, all you have to do is pass the certification test and be able to convince someone they should trust you. That's it.

Contract negotiations do not equate to branding. All Jay-Z needs from branding is money to get his ideas off the ground. In contract negotiations he will have someone actively trying to defeat him. This isn't the streets, Jay-Z should sit this one out iMO before he starts to look dumb. He's already done a shite ton for someone with almost zero education.

He is partnering with CAA for contract negotiations, he'll be the recruiter/public face

These are the top agents right? Rosenhaus, Boras...many of the best agents went to law school. Law school gives you practice in the art of negotiation that makes you successful.
I don't think Jay-Z feels like negotiating Kosta Koufos and James Jones.

well this IS the NBA we're talking about. if he gets high profile guys, he has all the power
i doubt he'll negotiate shite, but he may be used to get players to take certain deals at the 11th hour
the NBA has pretty set contracts and ranges...this isn't MLB or even the NFL, where contracts are more wide open

And if this player is a Dwight Howard type? Or any player that may want a franchise to make personnel changes or cultural changes ? WIll he understand how to manipulate teams to achieve that goal since he is likely to only represent MAX guys who are the franchises pieces?

If I am an NBA agent, I do not want Jay-Z to become an agent. It would totally cheapen the profession in my mind IMO. I hope he didn't just wake up today and say "oh I think I want to be an NBA agent now!"., WTF.

Edit: The toughest job an agent has is selling himself to prospective clients and their families. If you can do that you can be an agent.
