Yeah, you're probably right. He is obviously terrible at making people rich.

lol Not quite. Plenty of agents are business students in undergrad and never go to law school. Most law schools are lucky if there's even a Sports law class offered. Sure there's obviously contract law, but it's not like there's some agent specific stuff. And how often are there even contract law disputes had within the sports community? Rarely.

If you want to become an agent, all you have to do is pass the certification test and be able to convince someone they should trust you. That's it.

Why would Jay Z be an agent, its not like he knows anything about branding....oh wait. Some ignorant people in here. Business isn't rocket science.

Contract negotiations do not equate to branding. All Jay-Z needs from branding is money to get his ideas off the ground. In contract negotiations he will have someone actively trying to defeat him. This isn't the streets, Jay-Z should sit this one out iMO before he starts to look dumb. He's already done a shite ton for someone with almost zero education.

He is partnering with CAA for contract negotiations, he'll be the recruiter/public face

These are the top agents right? Rosenhaus, Boras...many of the best agents went to law school. Law school gives you practice in the art of negotiation that makes you successful.

I don't think Jay-Z feels like negotiating Kosta Koufos and James Jones.

well this IS the NBA we're talking about. if he gets high profile guys, he has all the power

i doubt he'll negotiate shit, but he may be used to get players to take certain deals at the 11th hour

the NBA has pretty set contracts and ranges...this isn't MLB or even the NFL, where contracts are more wide open

And if this player is a Dwight Howard type? Or any player that may want a franchise to make personnel changes or cultural changes ? WIll he understand how to manipulate teams to achieve that goal since he is likely to only represent MAX guys who are the franchises pieces?

If I am an NBA agent, I do not want Jay-Z to become an agent. It would totally cheapen the profession in my mind IMO. I hope he didn't just wake up today and say "oh I think I want to be an NBA agent now!"., WTF.

Once again, he's partnering with an existing agency for branding purposes.

LINK

quote:

According to the report, Jay-Z will let CAA's player agents handle things like contract negotiations and normal basketball duties, but use his part to build things like global marketing plans and business ventures.

He's not suddenly going to be devoting his life to helping Andrew Bynum get hotel reservations for his next vacation or dogsitting for Chris Bosh or locking himself in a room for 12 plus hours to hammer out contract details with the Raptors GM.

Are you in law school? Or know anyone who has been? What you learn about negotiations in law school you could learn by reading "Getting to Yes." This idea that you need to be a lawyer to be an agent is kind of silly. I hope people keep thinking it because maybe it'll give me a voodoo mind trick over these players after I pass the bar.

Edit: The toughest job an agent has is selling himself to prospective clients and their families. If you can do that you can be an agent.

Do you know who LeBron James' agent is currently? Rich Paul, a nobody Honestly, I'm surprised more of these low level guys don't just represent themselves. If you're signing for the league minimum anyway, why give 3% to someone else?
