You can't compare the Cal years with Camby, that's an outlier. But this does seem like a pretty good gig that's open. Granted, I don't know anything about their administration. But if Rhode Island is good. UMass should be too no?

I'm not sure how good of a job it is now, but that Marcus Camby team was fricking awesome.

No. Western MA is a tough place to get kids to go. Pre Cal UMass was the worst program in the nation for a reason

Does Camby have any eligibility left?

Not at the moment. I think it could be, but it needs more support from school administrators, which judging by how much leniency they just gave Derek Kellogg, I'm not sure they care enough.

When Cal was there, the Mullins Center was a new, top-notch facility. I don't think they've done anything to improve it since it opened though.

Bruiser Flint wasted some talented teams and was rightfully fired for underachieving, but they replaced him with Steve Lappas, a meh hire who was mediocre at Villanova. Then they quit the "U" Game rivalry with UConn.

The instability of the A-10 hurts, too. It was a fun league in the 90s with Jarvis at GW, Chaney at Temple, Martelli at St Joseph's and Harrick at URI, but it's not consistently deep anymore.

What about another place Cal was at Memphis? They hired Josh Pastner and Tubby Smith after Cal. Either they have a horrible athletic department or a lot of coaches have passed on that job.

Rural western Massachusetts is a tough sell. It's an average Atlantic-10 job.

They used to, but they are killing it in the football area. I really think Tubby was always seen as a transition hire until they feel comfortable in hiring Penny Hardaway.

No excuse for the program to be bad. Ton of local talent, NBA arena, brand new practice facility, and a ton of fan support.

The 90's were truly a great time for all college basketball, not just the A-10.

That program has been cursed by conference affiliation recently IMO.

They floundered after Finch was forced out and once Cal got them competitive again, Louisville, Cincinnati and Marquette left for the Big East.

Now they're in the AAC and it has been weak, particularly with UConn being down. SMU and Cincinnati won 30 games this year and they only got 6 seeds. I imagine it's hard to sell good coaches and players on the league right now.

Ehhh I'd argue that is an issue for CFB, but not basketball. There are plenty of schools doing just fine in small conferences. I'd argue the Big East isn't much better than the AAC and they just had a 1 seed. Gonzaga a 1 seed.

This x1000.

In the 90s, I probably enjoyed college basketball more than college football. Now it's not even close, college football is so much better/enjoyable.

I would disagree since the Big East put 7 teams into the tournament this year, same as the B1G. Maybe they are overrated, but certainly the perception is that they are a much stronger league.

And I would point to Wichita State as an example of a really good team that was under seeded due to a weak conference this season. It's not like no one knows how successful they've been under Marshall.

Gonzaga is an outlier since they have nearly two decades worth of tournament appearances now. They schedule tough OOC games and have earned respect as a consistently solid team. However, they also typically bomb in the tournament, with only one Elite Eight appearance under Few.

The very first basketball game I specifically remember was Arkansas/UMass in 95. They were the top two ranked teams in the country I think. It was a BIG deal in Arkansas at the time. UMass was about as high profile as it got back then. As someone who grew up in the 90s I'd love to see them make a make a comeback.

They were underseeded because they failed to beat any of the good teams on their schedule

Is that it? At least they played those games. Those losses happened before Christmas, too.

They just beat Dayton, who got a 7 seed, yet had more losses and whose best win was maybe Vandy. And I'm not buying that URI makes the A-10 that much better than the Valley.
