re: Is UMass a remotely good job still?

Not at the moment. I think it could be, but it needs more support from school administrators, which judging by how much leniency they just gave Derek Kellogg, I'm not sure they care enough.
They don't have any money to spare b/c of their precarious conference situation. They were put in a tight spot when the MAC demanded they move all of their sports into the conference. That probably would have been a death sentence for their basketball long term so they decided it was better to just go independent in football.
As long as they remain independent in football they are going to have to be really conservative with their hiring and firing in all other sports. If they could get into the AAC they'd probably be willing to move their bball out of the A-10 since they'd then be playing schools like UConn, Memphis, and Temple.

You make a really good point. I think they considered moving back down to FCS, but I read their AD is insistent on making them viable for another conference.
The AAC seems like the natural fit, but the conference currently has a basketball problem, while football has been relatively good. I doubt adding UMass football is attractive to them.
They need to do what they can to support the basketball program because they can't bank on football alone to get an invite. That area of the country just doesn't have the appetite for major college football.

Comparing UMass against Memphis just because of the Calipari tie is asinine and shortsighted.
UMass without Calipari - three Tournament berths, nine league titles (one since 1976 in the 'Yankee,' 2007 A-10), no conference tournaments ... ALL-TIME
Memphis made a bad hire with Pastner that will take time to recover, but no one great was going to follow Calipari given the circumstances, and let's not forget that for all his faults, Pastner went .700 here (.700 in conference) with four Tournament berths in seven seasons.
Tubby may or may not be the answer but he's a sensible hire to return the program back from Pastner's mess, who couldn't keep his players from transferring out. It's only been one season. Hopefully he can re-stabilize the program for the next HC.
UMass -
ESPN ranked Memphis 19 in its top 50 all-time NCAAB program series in 2012. UMass didn't crack the honorable mention list. Boston College made the T50, only program in the state.
To answer the OP, UMass was only a good job once in its history.

Let's not forget that Dr. J played his college ball at UMass.

I don't buy this. They were throwing around crazy money to keep Cal and they weren't being hit with any postseason ban or scholarship reduction. The athletic department was a mess back then.

The AD/admin being a dumpster fire when Cal left was all I pretty much meant by that, yeah.

Shirley Raines would have dropped football if she could have.

Those losses happened before Christmas, too.
Yes that is when every team plays their OOC opponents. It is where a team like Wichita makes up for their conference schedule. They just lost all of them.
They had a schedule resume of a 10 seed. Their was talk of them not getting an at-large if they lost the conference tourney.
Now if they took in to account KenPom like they should then yes they were horribly underseeded.

They just beat Dayton, who got a 7 seed, yet had more losses and whose best win was maybe Vandy. And I'm not buying that URI makes the A-10 that much better than the Valley.
A-10 was a 3 bid league. Dayton had good wins against Vandy and @Alabama.

You agree that it is just a matter of time before Penny takes over? He's turned East in to a damn powerhouse already.

Larry bird played at Indiana state... doesn't make IsU a good job.
As the one guy alluded to, the calipari era really skewed everyone's view of umass. It's not nearly as good of a job/program that we think it is.

UMASS just went and grabbed some kids from NOLA...

The AAC was #7 ranked RPI conference; I don't see it being better than 7 or perhaps 6 on a regular basis, but there was a good distance between it and #6. But it could be a lot closer to the top 6 and I think it will be if the bottom teams improve.
The "committee" is inconsistent, ignores losses, and is an overall joke.
U Mass really hasn't had high level hoops in years. They did get a couple of good players from NOLA - one really good one.
