He won the WS with two different teams , both of whom were storied franchises but yet had gone 80 plus and 100 plus years respectively without a winning a WS.

Yes. No doubt, most innovative executive of the time.

Yeah, I think that is overlooked.

Can't argue with success, but frick these teams really opened the purse strings to help him out.

Additionally, being bad for so long gave him a wealth of talent to play with, at least in Chicago, not sure how much that was in play in Boston.

I understand your point about the timeframe etc, but both of those teams were in pretty good position.

He has to be in the comversation. Yes he has money to work with in Chicago, but he didnt really make any huge free agent aquisitions until a couple years ago (3 years into his tenure). The core of this team was put together through the draft and a couple of great trades.

Schwarber- 2014 draft
Bryant- 2013 draft
Almora- 2012 draft
Baez- 2011 draft
Russell- trade w/OAK 2014
Rizzo- trade w/SD 2012
Fowler- trade w/HOU 2015
Arrieta & Strop- trade w/BAL 2013
Hendricks- trade w/TEX 2012

eh...they are about middle of the road with their payroll. He drafted well with CHC and developed the young talent.

You're clueless. Middle of the pack in salary. He made 2 high profile signings. 1 worked

EVERY OTHER CONTRIBUTION WAS THROUGH THE DRAFT OR TRADE.

Probably so. What he did in Chicago is more impressive I think than Boston. With the first title in Boston he stepped into a contender in Boston with Pedro, Manny, Varitek, Damon, Trot Nixon already on the roster. He made some great moves to add Ortiz, Schilling and Bill Mueller and then drafted the youth that was on the 07 title team

He had a full rebuild in Chicago and managed perfectly. People can make comments about the Cubs resources but he spent in a smart way and only added when they were truly a contender. Heyward is the only bad contract on that team (and it's real bad but still)

Not to hijack....but if I gotta pick one reason why we won THIS year. Dexter Fowler decided to re-sign at the last minute for less money than other places on an ONE YEAR DEAL. Who in the hell signs 1 year deals in baseball????

definitely can't be overlooked...hate to lose him next year.

To answer your question...he understood what they had in chicago and chose a ring over money.
