Is the 1984 BYU National Championship the least deserving NC of all time?

The LSU game got me reading about the 1984 BYU team. I knew they had won a NC, but I assumed they played a Boise St. style schedule and had beaten a legitimate team. I was way wrong.

That #3 Pittsburgh team finished the season 3-7-1. That Michigan team? 6-6 and unranked. They didn't beat a single team who finished the season ranked. 3 point win at home against a 6-6 Wyoming team. No team on their schedule had fewer than 4 losses.

Only unbeaten and Bama is winner of this question

Don't blame BYU for something they didn't have control of

, how is this blaming them? Have you ever seen a weaker resume for the best team in the country?

Washington should have won the NC in 1984. UW went 11-1 and beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. They had a respectable loss to USC that year.

But the AP and Coaches gave BYU the nod.

LSU in 2007 needed a Rube Goldberg contraption just to make it to the title game where they faced off against a weak Ohio State team

Do you know they came back to beat Michigan and Bosco was on 1 leg. Injured knee early

If resume means everything then why are teams playing SMS Montana St etc this week?

They were the only unbeaten in country Washington didn't win their own conference that year.

because it's good to get a scrimmage type game in before the real games start... Whoever holds FCS cupcakes and their quality against national title contenders is a dumbass

Apparently the OP is because he is trying to say BYU is least deserving

I mean Bama was given the NC in 64 but lost its bowl game

That's why Bama is the answer

I think 2007 can be thrown away. It took moving heaven and earth for a 2 loss team to win the title and even though there is now a CFB playoff I'm not sure this kind of year happens again.

Look at 1980 Georgia.

The Dawgs beat three top-20 teams by a combined 15 points.

But they also played four teams ranked between 30th and 59th and won those four games by a combined 22. They finished the season having played just three teams that finished better than 6-5.

The SEC wasn't very good in 1980, with four of 10 teams ranking outside of the top 50. Plus, six-game conference schedules meant that you might miss a couple of the better teams in your given conference. Of the five best non-UGA teams in this relatively watered-down SEC, the Dawgs played just two, missing No. 5 Alabama, No. 22 Mississippi State, and No. 42 LSU.

They went from unranked to #13 because they beat a Pittsburgh team that finished the year 3-7-1.

BYU did all they could, I get it. Cal State Fullerton went 11-1 against essentially the same schedule and never got ranked.

That's fine. I'm asking if BYU is the least deserving. You obviously disagree. That's okay.

Again who else was unbeaten that year? BYU couldn't go to any other bowl if they wanted to.

They beat who they were told to play, was ranked and moved up in way they did it at the time. But to say least deserving, no that goes to Alabama

No one was deserving really. I think the best team in 2007 by ability was Oklahoma but they had to go and lose to Texas Tech.
