Is Serena Williams a drama queen?

She said she had the flu during this match she just won, and she looks like it makes her tired just to talk.
I don't watch a lot of tennis, but I feel like I've seen her act overly-sick several times before.
Does she just get sick a lot, or does she just show it more than others, or is she playing it up and milking it for the cameras?

On the level with LeBron.

quote:None of the above. In tennis, you are alone out there. For some players, in order to take pressure off themselves, they come up with an injury or sickness in order to clear their mind of "fear of losing." Not saying I agree with it but it happens more than one would expect. I have seen it my whole life. At podunk tournaments at 8 years old in Alexandria without a fan or camera in sight

It seems like she starts hamming it up regularly nowadays to prepare reason for a potential loss early in a match. Staggering around the court, acting confused, dropping the ball before serving, looking like she is about to cry or fall over dead between points.
quote:
This is insane looks like she is going to cry after every point. Grow up and play like a woman not a child.
quote:
Great now she is throwing up is that her excuse if she loses.
quote:
It's her winning methodology. She needs to feel like the underdog to raise her game and feel like she earned the victory or made a heroic comeback. The thing is she doesn't want to be the tragic heroine, she wants to be the heroine who overcomes the challenges.
Because there's no real challenge (her normal game trumps everybody else on tour) she has to invent problems and setbacks that will then motivate her to win. As if a huge injustice is happening on the court and must be rectified. That's how she wins and it works beautifully for her. Why change it? Nobody even calls her out on it.
quote:
I agree with this. . I used to get upset by it until I started appreciating the ridiculousness of it and started being amused by it. . She puts on a grand show overcoming all kinds of dastadly villians and insurmountable obstacles to gloriously defy death itself and carve out a routine win over an opponent with half her skill level. Its great theater in the tradition of Shakespeare, or WWE.

Huge drama queen. She also will put on a dainty act when doing some interviews etc where she's a delicate flower. I hate her.

yes a person playing tennis with the flu, who came back from down a set, is a drama queen.

I just feel like I've seen her in several different matches in the past few years with an exasperated look on her face like she could fall over at any minute. And like I said, I don't even regularly watch tennis... and I've seen that in the relatively few matches of hers I've seen.
I can't recall any other players doing the same thing.
Just her.
It's just something I've noticed.

There are great moments in sports of athletes battling pain and sickness. Kirk Gibson hobbling after his home run in the World Series, Willis Reed coming out of the locker room, Tiger winning the US Open with the bum knee, Jordan's flu game, Kurt Angle taking the Olympic gold medal with a broken frickin neck.
Today's athletes are perhaps the most self-aware and want to create their own unique and signature moments. They overplay injuries and put on performances to help build their image. Until the media stops buying the foolishness or stops paying attention to it, it will continue.

Not sure whether I buy it or not.
I've played sports and I know somewhat what you're talking about.
When you go into a game when you don't expect to win, the pressure is off and you can just play. But when you are actually doing good and you realize you can actually win, the pressure comes right back.
And after the game is over you aren't going to make excuses even after you won unless you are hamming it up.

she's got a little mcenroe in her ... but she uses it to make herself one of the 2 or 3 best women's tennis players ever, if not the greatest ...

She's gotta be on PEDs. How in the hell does someone play their best tennis in their 30s?

She's a champion tennis player.

She's a count no one in the tennis world likes her
