...but hasn't won it since?

Or is it not really weird at all?

I think it just shows how difficult it is to win the NCAA Tournament.

It would be interesting to see how his '06 and '16 teams would have fared had they avoided the Mason and MTSU banana skins. That Flintstones squad was legit though. His 09 team was damn good but had to face a legendary UNC team in the final.

No. Winning a 64 team tournament is rather difficult. It's much more difficult than winning a poll / winning a 2 team tournament / winning a 4 team tournament in football. Several all time greats don't have multiple national championships. Jim Boeheim, for example, also only has one.

Lot of great teams in there and amazing consistency.

I feel like he thought when the pro jobs came up that he could outlast Coach K and win another title or two. Unfortunately, for him, K kept going and going, Calipari started to own CB, and yet the guy who owns him more than anyone is Huckleberry Hound. Izzo is missing some shots on the four year/one and done balance now. He's an incredible coach, but it's nice to see him vulnerable for a change.

Basketball takes luck, talent and circumstance.

And the tournament takes that in spades.

Too many teams...

Half the winners are often flukes or get hot at the right time. Tournament is too bloated.

MSU recruiting has been all over the place since 2000. Top 20 for the most part, but several years where they really stunk it up. None of those classes were particularly memorable. When you consider how well the blue bloods have recruited over this period, it's not that weird.

It seems like Izzo does best when he's flying under the radar a bit, not complete underdog but kind of afterthought.

Aka this year they will probably make some noise out of nowhere

It's not weird but Izzo is an interesting case study for how people evaluate coaches in regards to regular season and tournament performance

He's been to 7 final 4s....that is winning IMO, I would give anything for my team to get to "A" final 4 let alone the championship game or to win it all.

This ain't college football prom queen contest, this tourney separates the men from the boys....and there are no FLUKEs, maybe a round or two, after that it's legit.

I agree. He's made the Final Four as a 5 seed and as a 7 seed in the past.

Bobby Knight won 3 championships...in 40 years...and he's considered a coaching legend/genius...even back when the tournament wasn't as even.

Even the great GOAT John Wooden won 10 Nattys in 30 years. The best ever - the absolute best ever no question - took many years and had many years of no Nattys.

It's not easy to work your way to a place where you can dominate...and even if you do work your way to that place...you can easily be knocked off. Look at Calhoun...Bob Knight in the 90's...Even coach K has been questioned. Boeheim. Calipari is attacked, Pitino was...

Ben Howland took UCLA to 3 Final Fours in 4 years and got fricking FIRED!!!!!!!

Yeah, I don't get why MSU doesn't consistently have top ten classes.

Up until I think last year every single 4 yr player that's played for Izzo made it to the Final 4 at least once. That's impressive

Not really, I mean look at all the talent Dean Smith had in Chapel Hill. Yet he "only" won two national titles.

06 wasn't doing shite. They underachieved all year. Last year would have been more interesting. Definitely a final four type team. But Roy Toy owns Izzo so if they had to play them in the final four it would prolly be another FF loss

I don't like Duke or Coach K, but I think what he's done is more impressive than Wooden. By a fair amount too.
