Totally BOGUS, Paul!

You suck, dude. I'm glad that Brennan's kicked you out of your house and made it into a diner.

I go to the chess subreddit for my chess fix. Tata Steel Chess Tournament is currently under way. Lots of exciting stuff happening in the chess world the last few months.

Chess was a very different game back then. Not rules wise but competition wise. He is known as being the first modern player though. He was a great genius that played the game positionally in the way that modern gm's play. Truly before his time. It is interesting that when his games that we have the notation for are run through engines they are very precisely played. Just leaps above the competition at the time. But the competition was very weak relatively speaking.

That simply isn't true. Hand eye coordination, sweat, muscles all get strained during NASCAR. I'm no fan of driving, but it's much more athletic than moving pieces on a board.

In classical games stamina becomes a very important factor. Players can sit at the table for 8 hours or more a game and 12 games in a match over a few weeks. I'm not saying that chess is a sport. I don't think it is. I just don't think that NASCAR is much of a sport either.

He was as much World Champion as anybody until the torunaments started after WWII

His main competition, Anderssen, was a great player

Morphy is actually significant in US History. He was the first American to take on Europe culturally and emerge victorious.

Are all or most of Paul Morphy's games preserved in chess notation for review today?

He was the best player in the world, pretty much indisputably. Someone like Lasker, Capablance, or Alekhine were at least playing the strongest players of their day. Though there still was much lacking for the organization. There was just so little organization. He never played Staunton who was supposed to be the European Champion that he needed to beat. But he dominated all of the other great European players of the day. He was just on another level.

The game was just so undeveloped at the time. He was great for the context of the time. You could say that is kind of the nature of chess. It's something that is always building upward and understanding is growing with each generation, but people just didn't take it seriously at the time. People didn't study and train for it like they do today. It was just kind of a hobby that people did in their idle time.

Chess is a competition, not a sport.

All sports are competitions, not all competitions are sports.

Many of his games survive

Morphy versus the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard
quote:

The chess game played in 1858 at an opera house in Paris between the American chess master Paul Morphy and two strong amateurs, the German noble Karl II, Duke of Brunswick and the French aristocrat Comte Isouard de Vauvenargues, is among the most famous chess games. Duke Karl and Count Isouard consulted together, playing as partners against Morphy. The game is often used by chess instructors to teach the importance of rapid development of one's pieces, the value of sacrifices in mating combinations, and other chess concepts. The game is sometimes called "The Opera Game" or "A Night at the Opera" (French: Partie de l'opéra).

Paul, you are a righteous dude and a great chessplayer. Lots of people refer to themselves in the third person, so that's cool that you do it -- it's your thing.

People diss you because you are from New Orleans and they are jealous and probably because you live in a diner, but, I say, let the Haters hate, man, you just keep on Truckin'.

How and who he beat is convincing enough to know that he was easily the best, but it's like how the college championship used to be before they actually had a championship game. Can you really be a champion if there wasn't a championship game?
