Coaching in basketball has to matter least, right?

I've heard hockey relies heavily on coaching.

Football obviously. A coach calls a set play every single play of the game.

Look at LSU's quarterback situation and the answer is obvious.

Basketball does not matter at high school level if you have the athletes. But it can make a team great. Look at anacoco

Look at LSU's approach at the plate and handling of pitchers and it might not be that obvious.

If you're talking about pro sports, it's football hands down. Football is a much more complicated tactical game than other sports and it requires years of coaching experience before a coach is truly to take over as the head man. By contrast, there have been a number of occasions in the NBA, MLB and European soccer where a person with little or no previous coaching experience was named manager/head coach. A Derek Fisher or Jason Kidd or Walt Weiss hiring would never ever happen in football.

Football because there are so many moving parts and so many different responsibilities. The sad thing for LSU is that basketball doesn't need a lot of coaching, especially with modern motion offense. The main coaching is during timeouts and coming out of timeouts and establishing a philosophy. Coaching basketball requires intensity and passion to motivate players.

I'm not the biggest Jim Rome fan, but he had a good rant about baseball managing in the American League. He was league "what do you really do? Fill out a lineup card, chew on some sunflower seeds, and watch the next three run jack."

An NFL team hired Raheem Morris.

In the NFL you have a break every few seconds to make unlimited subs. You have a direct line of communication to your QB and MLB also.

It's not like managing in the National League is rocket science. Knowing about double switches and sending a pinch-hitter to bat in the pitcher's spot in the lineup is not that hard. The smartest people in baseball are the GMs and front office. They are almost entirely responsible for a team's success or failure. A baseball manager is called a manager for a reason. Their only responsibilities are managing people and cultivating a happy, healthy work environment.

While I do agree on what you said about the NBA and Euro soccer; I don't think the same could be said about baseball necessarily.

Football. There are so many things you have to factor into one play. It's ridiculous how productive some of these offenses are given the numerous defensive schemes you can run. Goes to show how much the coaches matter in football.

Morris had over ten years of coaching experience before he was hired as the Bucs head coach. OTOH someone like Robin Ventura had zero coaching experience before he was named manager of the White Sox.
