I know there was the guy back in the day that built the Red Sox and Yankees of the teens and 20s, but how many others are there that are really comparable..

Theo's resume would be pretty untouchable if they win.

no winning in a major market in a sport with no salary cap is not that big an accomplishment, go win a title today with the a's and then turn around and do it in tampa bay and you're the GOAT. Boston and Chicago are some of the biggest markets with biggest dollars, still what he's done is very impressive. He can also thank the astros brass for being dumb and taking mark appel ahead of kris bryant.

enlighten me on why what theo has done is so spectacular? Yes he's done a great job drafting and making trades but regardless he has some major money to toss around on trash like jason heyward, when was the last time oakland did that? Tampa Bay making the world series in 2008 was more impressive to me, sorry.

If it's so easy, why hasn't any one gotten a championship in Chicago for over one hundred years?

Its never that easy, its just easier than how kansas city or tampa bay or oakland has it. Those franchise cant drop $200m on a crappy outfielder like heyward to not play in a deciding game 6. If you dont see that I dont know what to tell you. The a's had to give away MVP josh donaldson in his prime bc they couldn't pay him. Jason Giambi,Tim Hudson,Barry Zito,Mark Mulder, I could go on and on. The cubs draft well sure, but its nice to be able to retain guys and add other big pieces along the way. Small market teams cant do that. The royals team last year was more impressive.

What Billy Beane did over the last 15 years with oakland is much more impressive, winning with caps on what you can spend with a team that brings in nominal revenue is much more impressive, its just is. Epstein is a great GM but he's been in some exceptional situations.

What other GMs have built championship teams for separate organizations?

Not really. If anything, I'd argue the Rays are a better example. Beane hasn't won shite, and Moneyball never happens if he doesn't have multiple all star caliber pitchers.

bc you have nothing to argue about the cubs payroll this year was $186M while oakland was at $99m and tampa bay was at $71m. Even cleveland is more impressive their payroll is 22nd.

LINK

go figure those with the most resources have it easiest, kinda like why the rich guys always get hot girls.

Yes those that have the resources have it easiest...

Also that is team payroll, the Cubs were 14th in opening day salary owed.

Baseball has also proven teams that spend more don't win more. What The has done in drafting and trades to build these teams is impressive.

its a great combo when you suck for as long as the cubs did to get tons of young talent cheap, like kris bryant combined with overpaying people like heyward that small market cant do. You're missing the whole point of what im saying that oakland has to give away MVPs in their prime like donaldson and giambi while the cubs can afford $25m/year for a crappy outfielder like heyward to put on the bench for a pivotal game. How hardheaded are you? If oakland had a $25m/year player he'd be hitting 3rd in their lineup not 7th or the bench.

Branch Rickey is the greatest GM in MLB history and it's not even close. The man created the modern day farm system and built two dynasties (Cardinals, Dodgers) over a 30 year span. He was also largely responsible for the 1960 WS that the Pirates won. All of the top players on that Pirates team (Clemente, Mazeroski, Groat, etc..) were acquired by Rickey.
