It will be interesting to see how the popularity of the two sports trends in the next several decades. Globally basketball is def on the rise, but I'm not sure about here in the US. Personally I (and almost everyone I know) much prefer football. It is more exciting and each game is an event, but it is a violent game and the concussion issue might have legs.
As people like to say, 100 years ago baseball, boxing, and horse racing were the 3 most popular sports. Just in the last couple of decades we have seen tennis fall and golf rise and now start to fall.
