Might as well be if he can't beat that guy out.

Actually that might be prefereable, maybe there would be a franchise QB this time instead of DE's like the other 3 times the Texans had the first pick. However, given that they went 9-7 last year with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mallet and Case Keenum starting games and Tom Savage playing in 2 games, i think they are more likely head back to the middle of the draft.

Truth is neither Hoyer or Mallet are franchise QBs and the fact that Mallet couldn't win the job is very telling of that.

Sucks because I had high hopes for Mallet to be able to solidify himself as the starter.

Mallet was the unknown, but he was a mid round pick for a reason and those guys rarely become franchise QB's. e's got a big arm but was never very accurate. Hoyer could get them to the playoffs but that's about it. The division round is the max unless the D is like 2000 Ravens level.

I'm all for the tank. Especially with Foster out. 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 are worthless.

its tank or you are going to have to give up 4-5 picks to move up for Hackenberg or whoever.

Same here, but what does that say about our coach? Rick Smith knew we had a deficiency at QB and didn't address it worth a shite.

What does this mean? He can't transform Mallet into something he's not, plus he's liked Hoyer from the get go, according to 610am he talked about getting Hoyer to another team he interviewed with. I think it says he's betting on himself.

I think Smith should have been axed with Kubes, but that's clearly O Brien's call, if BOB wanted Bortels or Bridgewater, they would have gotten him.

I think that people wanting Hackenburg in Houston are looking at the wrong B1G QB. I think Sundfeld will be a better pro QB.

I am surprised that Mallet lost out this job to Hoyer though. I also was surprised to see Keenum let go at the end of the year.

The fact that Rick Smith is still GM baffles me. GMs really earn their worth in the late rounds of the draft and he has missed on nearly every late round pick. Also the fact that since this franchises beginnings we have not had a stable QB (I know Schaub was pretty good for about 2 seasons, but he was never going to take the team all the way) is another reason he needs to go.

Put the cherry on top that Peyton Manning wanted to come to the Texans but Smith and Kubiak told him no thank you! Seriously do not understand how Smith still has a job.

Where was this reported? I have never heard that one. I am not saying it is not true, but I do not think it is true.

i know that rumor has been out there, but i don't see how they could have done it if they wanted too. It's not like he took a veteran discount and the Texans had no room under the cap. Plus people forget that at the time it was no given he could play again at all, let alone at a high level.

But yes, baffling the Smith still has a job. Its not the late round picks that bother me its the mid rounds, you need 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks to start and contribute. Last year they had the first pick in ever round and basically got nothing to show for it.

There is no direct report straight from Peyton's mouth, but Archie supposedly told Spencer Tillman that the Texans were Peyton's first choice but that the Texans were not interested.

I realize that's like 3 degrees of separation from the actual source...but still it's good enough for me to add on to my reasoning of not liking Rick Smith.

“Spencer Tillman works with Archie (Manning) in New York on CBS on the weekends,” Allen said on SportsRadio 610. “When Peyton became free and clear Archie told Spencer that Houston was his first choice.”

Well all we need now is for Kevin Bacon to play Archie, Cooper, Eli, or Payton and it would be official
