I'd say 6:

Paul
Rubio
Rondo
Conley
Ball
Wall

What do you mean by true? Also, are you asking just in general or what teams have a "true" pg who is actually decent?

I agree.

Simmons is as much a PG as you'll find. He's Jason Kidd, but half a foot taller.

A true point guard is a player who sees the floor and play develop instinctively enough to know where the open shooter is without second thought.

A player who runs the offense making it a well-oiled efficient machine making everyone around them better...

CP3
LeBron
Simmons
Wall
Rondo-especially Rondo of Boston days
Conley

Mike Bibby
Steve Nash
Jason Kidd
Magic Johnson
John Stockton
Anfernee Hardaway
Tim Hardaway
Kevin Johnson
Oscar Roberson
Dennis Johnson
Pete Maravich
Etc...

The game has changed to combo guards so much we don't see near as many as we use to.

And before someone says I forgot Golden State their assists are predominantly a collective system based off the extra pass a consequence of amazing collective of high percentage three point shooters instead of one single player.

This is a great time for PG play in the league.

15 legit guys, with another 5 young players who we have to see what they grow into are out there.

It is a great time for PG play, I never said it wasn't. I am saying the position has evolved from the prototypical old school PG to a new Combo Guard that can both create and shoot at a high clip.

But a true pass first visionary type guard is far and few between. Hell LeBron is still the best creator I have seen since Magic, especially early in his career. CP3 is also an incredible passer seeing the floor and play develop. Simmons also. It is just something these guys are born with.

Assists are kind of a bullshite stat.

The point sets up the offense.

If the ball moves around and the point guard doesn't get an assist, it doesn't matter. The point guard set the tempo.

If a point guard pounds the ball and hunts the assist, the ball doesn't move, players stand around, he's more selfish.

Curry is more of a point guard than this thread is crediting him for.

You make an excellent point. It really is a deeper discussion than one will allow themselves to believe.

It is true what you say. I understand. Seeing the floor and creating for others outside a set play or set offense is something of instinct and vision that few ever possess. They learn it young and just have a feel. College is proof of your point about running offenses and getting their team into sets, but a true freakish talent like LeBron and Magic along with CP3 stick out like a sore thumb. Simmons obviously did and does too.

if curry shot as poorly as Lonzo, he could be the best pass first pg in the league. he also wouldn't shoot as much as Lonzo. but when you are the best shooter in league history, you shoot
