Just curious if a team drafts a player who doesn't want to play for the team who drafted him. I am sure they can go to Europe and play. Does the team that drafted them lose rights to said player after the following years draft or what?

i think it's until another team purchases them or the team choose to relinquish them.

i might be wrong though.

ETA: Apparently i'm wrong.
I seem to remember the magic having some prospect that they still own the rights to. Vasquez?

damn that's a long time.

So what's the deal with Rubio, heard on ESPN that he doesn't want to play in Minn or maybe his Spanish league team won't let him go? Are they going to just trade him or something.

If he decides to stay in Spain, they could trade his rights. That would make sense since they drafted Flynn with the next pick. Maybe they anticipated this.

I think they will if he says he is going back to Spain. He is only 18 so they don't want to lose him completly if he goes back for 3 years. There are a few teams who have told the T Wolves they are interested including the Rockets and Knicks.

It is funny how they were saying last night they drafted both because they want them playing together, now they are saying they drafted both incase Rubio pulled this.

I hope they were just saying they planned on both playing together as smoke screen. You don't even have to know much about basketball to know those two wouldn't work well together.

This is the reason I was asking. They GM for the Timberwolves was on Mike and Mike show this morning and was saying that they drafter Rubio knowing that they may not have him for up to 2 years. I got the impression that his spanish league team wouldn't let him go. Now I hear on the Tirico and Van Pelt that Rubio is trying to pull an Eli Manning.

Cant really say i blame him in this case. I don't understand why you draft him if you think he won't play for you, unless you planned on trading him. T'wolves organization doesn't seem to really know what it's doing

Bucks got that chinese dude to go play there. If Rubio doesn't want to play for whatever team gets him, then he can keep his arse in spain imo.

This is what they are trying to do I think. They ga,bled on him being ok with playing there but if he didn't they knew there would be more than enough interest in working out a trade.

He has a $6.6 million buyout that becomes to $8 million in July, the NBA only allows teams to contribute 500K. He only made 97K last year.

Someone on ESPN stated that there is deal in place that would leave him 3 million in debt after 2 years playing in the NBA.

Based on the size of his buyout and his relatively meager earnings, I believe his case is going to the Spanish Supreme Court in October. I'm not sure if we'll have a good gauge on the situation until then.
