How is betting on baseball worse than using steroids?

Apparently Bonds and Clemens will be going to the hall eventually, but Pete Rose will not.

I don't get it, the guy was a gambling addict. He bet on all games, and all teams. Some people try to make it out like he was actively sabotaging his team to win bets, but that's just not how a gambling addict thinks (and he never bet against the reds anyway).

Bud Selig is a holier-than-thou prick

He was an acting manager betting on baseball games. Do you not see the potential damage here?

I agree and personally feel Pete should be in the HOF. But I also understand the stance.

One argument would be that it really hurts the game in terms of fan support if people think its rigged because of managers or players betting on the games.

Meanwhile steroid usage really helped the game with all of the excitement generated by the home run chase and the ridiculous seasons guys like Sosa, Mcgwire, and bonds had.

of course the fallout after the steroid scandal hurt, but i think people are pretty much over that now. So I think discouraging betting by setting a precedent with Rose makes more sense.

Not that I agree with it. Hed be on my HOF ballot

Are y'all serious?

He was the manager of the team, and he was betting on his own games.

I guess they don't understand that it is posted in every professional clubhouse in big black block letters DO NOT BET ON BASEBALL

Pete Rose accepted his ban he knew he had done something illegal. I have no sympathy for him.

OP, the only "proof" that he did not bet against the Reds is his word. And he's been proven, over & over & over again, to be a liar. Each time to cover his arse. Which is what he was doing, again, when he claimed this. And I have never read anywhere that he was/is diagnosed as a gambling addict. Everyone that knew him back then did call him a POS, just look at all his known associates for proof of that.

Everyone in baseball knows the the worst thing you can do is bet on baseball. It's the one thing you cannot do and if you do it you will get a lifetime ban. It's been that way for almost 100 years since the black sox scandal. Rose knew it and every player knows it.

This.

The bottom line is that steroid users cheat to get ahead of other players, but they're quite obviously trying to be the best they can be. Gambling on baseball opens up the door to either directly or indirectly letting your gambling negatively affect the way you manage your team.

FWIW I think the roid users and Pete should both be in the HOF, but I definitely understand why the writers and commissioners view gambling worse than roids.

Gambling predates steroids by a long time. Just read about what the Black Sox scandal did to the game a long time ago.

if you lose enough money, guys threaten your kids and mom and make you agree to intentionally throw/lose games.

guys using PEDs did so to improve their chances of winning and to make more money by doing so well.

there, see, not so hard.

I dont believe that for a second. If he is an addict like many here claim, he will do what it takes to win a bet.

Regardless of your thoughts on the morality of the offenses, betting on baseball was against the rules and carried a specific penalty of a lifetime ban. Steroid use didn't have that same penalty. Cheating on your wife is morally worse than stealing a candy bar, but one is against the law and the other isn't, it's just the way it is. I never understand why the discussion of steroid use gets equated to Pete Roses situation, they aren't the same at all
