18 years ago they started to get good hard working second tier players. Some were foreign. Dan Munson got it started. Few has taken it to another level. 3 and 4 star players, transfers, foreign players and great coaching.

St. Marys has done the same thing but not in the tournament. Good solid program.

I believe their success is due to their location. Spokane is the largest population center between Seattle and Minneapolis. It is a regional center, but small enough to not have other competing factors such as pro sports. It is also remote to much of the country, which has given the city an itch for big events and attention. Gonzaga became the city/region's team after that first elite 8 run and they didn't let go.

During Gonzaga's run UW has been a #1 seed and one of the NCAA's top NBA talent producers, Oregon to 3 Elite 8s, UCLA to multiple Final Fours, while USC built a state of the art basketball arena and started landing elite basketball recruits from across the country like DeMar Derozan and OJ Mayo.

Amazing that a team just made their first final four after 19 tries is a powerhouse yet Kansas has made the tournament in more consecutive seasons, with multiple final four runs and a national championship and they're overrated

When did people find out about Gonzaga? I didn't hear much about them in early 90's.

Maybe powerhouse was a poor choice of wording but y'all know what I meant. They were pretty much unheard of years ago and now it seems they are always in the tournament and can play with anybody since that first run.

Beating us on a buzzer beater in 99 put them on the map.

It seems like they have been very good since that year.

It's been a long process.

They were a small nobody Cinderella for about 5 years and then had to slowly build into a power.

From 1996-2002 they were seemingly always seeded in the teens and would go far in the tournament as the underdog.

I think 2002 was their first seed as high as #6 and promptly lost as the favorite.

2003 Zags were a #2 seed and promptly lost in the second round.

2004 Zags were a #3 seed and promptly lost in the second round.

I think Morrison Zags in 2005 was when you could call the Zags a power as they would get another #3 seed or higher 3 years in a row.

And promptly lose in the Sweet Sixteen.

Well, at least in this tourney, they cheated at one point against Northwestern and didn't get called for the goal tending. Only later did the NCAA make some weak assed statement that the call was blown. In addition to the uncalled goal tending, which probably should have been a technical, the technical called on the Northwestern coach finished off any comeback hopes Northwestern had. I am rooting against Gonzaga for the rest of the tourney.

They cheated on that goal tending and the refs were too incompetent to call it.

He brought in some legit P5 players this year via transfer, instead of relying on small white guys.

Keep a top 5 Coach at a school for twenty years that doesn't require the sheer number if recruits football does

Hell, look at Butler with the Celtics coach- and then look now- they upgraded a program.

It happens (rarely) in football- look at the rise of Utah and Louisville from mid-majors to the power 5
