I'm watching this story about Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke and Burke couldn't have been more open if he tried. I have no idea if baseball will have a "____ is gay!" type story anytime soon, but football and basketball certainly have had them. Have there not been openly gay players in the NBA, NFL, or college football?

Maybe open to their teammates but not to the public

Not open in the sense that they had a press conference to announce it

I don't know. From the looks of it he was in tons of newspaper articles talking about being gay like it was no big deal(which it isn't).

Because announcing it now gets you bravery awards and calls from the president. It's a pretty sweet deal.

it wasnt that long ago that being openly gay would likely end your career in the entertainment biz.

There was a 30 for 30 short on him. Dodgers definitely wanted to keep it under wraps, someone with the team offered him money to get married. He believed that his sexuality was a big reason he was traded. Don't remember if he came out while still playing for Oakland but it seemed about as obvious as you could get.

He was buds with tommy lasordas son who died of aids, who tommy apparently still doesn't believe was gay.
