It is something to be appreciated with how efficient Magic was able to score. He did his job, and he is the best to ever do his job. It took Lebron up until he got to Miami to even get his shooting percentages into .500+ But he has only improved since

You cant go seriously wrong with either pick. They are both great transcendent players. My pick is Lebron, and im completely confident in that pick.

Lets put it this way, lets call Lebron a pg. I know technically he is not but he is a better passer than most pg in the league, and in the leagues history. Do you want the pg who scores at will, but is less of a passer. Or the pg who facilitates at will, but is less of a scorer.

So, by your logic, Magic's nuts are in your mouth. Do you realize he has HIV?

I'm OK with this but I will NOT call LeBron a PG. I will call him what his teammates call him...."1 through 5". No player PERIOD in the history of the NBA has done what he has on the defensive side of the ball more less any great offensive player in the history of the game.

FACT - Lebron James 2× All-NBA Second Team (2005, 2007) 5× NBA All-Defensive First Team (2009–2013)

Even averaging 7.2 RPG per game as a PG, Magic Johnson NEVER made All-NBA 1st or 2nd Team Defense

It prob helps that when Magic got drafted by the Lakers he had 2 other future NBA Hall of Famers on his team that were in their prime. He also got to play with them for 7 seasons.

LeBron started his career on a team were the 2 best players were Zydrunas Igauskas and a second year player in Carlos Boozer who was gone the following season.

Magic was a great player, but he lucked into playing on a team with a lot of talent on it. Look at what LeBron was doing with shitty talent around him and now look at what he is doing with real talent surrounding him.

sure is, but no one remotely playing any defense in the 80s cancels that out.

If you ever get a chance to watch any 80s Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals, do yourself a favor and see if you can find defense, it won't be easy .

Slightest bit? You make the thought seem so far fetched? Well you better tell Phil Jackson who says LeBron has the tools to be better than Jordan, Charles Barkley who has said that by the time LeBron is done playing he will be better than Jordan, and Scottie Pippen who said LeBron IS better than Jordan. They must all be fricking retards that know less about basketball than you.

Lebron is close to passing Magic. If the argument is talent alone, there is no question, but with players like this it's not just about talent alone.

Lebron is the better scorer. There is no debate about that. He's a better defender by a good margin. He is a good passer, but he's not close to what Magic was. Magic is the greatest PG of all time - no one had the vision or the ability to make the plays that he did, and he did it at 6'9.

If you could choose between the two in their prime, I think the majority would pick Lebron but it would be a lot closer than you would think. Magic was a great player, an excellent leader and IMO he was more competitive than Lebron. Lebron has really stepped up as a leader the last two years and ultimately I think that's what will get him there. Personally I do not think he will ever catch Jordan because he was the perfect storm of talent, skill, work ethic and competitive drive, but if anyone does get their it will be Lebron.

I think he's at Magic's level (or close to it). That said, both truly incredible talents that I'm a fan of.

Magic was put on a Lakers team with outrageous talent all around him.

I'll give you that.

Lebron brought a crap Cavs team to the finals.

And got SWEPT. Not 4-1, or 4-2 or 4-3. SWEPT. Let that sink in. Also alot easier to get to the finals in a shitty eastern conference. A very weak Eastern Conference. But he made it. AND GOT SWEPT.

So, he goes to the heat, who by todays NBA standards are loaded with talent, yet Lebron is the GOAT for winning titles with a loaded team. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Magic remains one of the great names in basketball history but there are certain things about him that remain under-appreciated. He wasn't a great shooter from the outside (as his career 3 point percentage should tell you) but when you realize his career field goal percentage and total shooting percentages are comfortably better than Lebron's that should make you step back and re-evaluate the narrative that he couldn't shoot.

Magic became a better shooter later in his career, but there's no way to make a straight-faced argument that Magic was a better shooter than Lebron.
-Lebron's 3P%s's are better than Magic, and that's with a great deal more volume. AND
-Lebron's 2P% 's are a smidgeon below Magic's right now, but Lebron's average 2P% during the Heat years is better than Magic's best single season 2P%, and Lebron's career 2P% will be higher than Magic's after next year if he keeps up the numbers from the past four seasons.
Magic's overall shooting percentages are only better than Lebron's because Magic took very few three pointers. The only aspect of shooting that Magic has over Lebron is at the free throw line.

quote:

We shouldn't really try to compare Magic and Lebron in the sense of one being better or worse IMO. Both were dominant in their era, both led their teams to titles, both were able to make plays for their opponents with superior court vision, and both were physically powerful and difficult for the other guys to defend - but that's near where the comparisons end. They generally played different positions with different styles and have very different personalities

I've never understood the argument that players of different positions can't be compared. Positions in basketball don't mean anything -- they're completely arbitrary. Any player, regardless of position, can be evaluated via a WAR or VORP type analysis. Simply stated: how much better is the player's team as a result of the player being on it.

The Cavaliers won 61 games in 2009-10 with Lebron. They won 19 games the next year without him. A 42 game difference.

The Lakers won 58 games in 1990-91 with Magic. They won 43 games the next year without him. A 15 game difference.

The Bulls won 57 games in 1992-93 with Jordan. They won 55 games the next year without him. A 2 game difference.

Draw your own conclusions, but I think Lebron James is the greatest basketball player of all time.

Lebron has the luxury of playing in the NBA when it's at it's softest. LeBron is strongest person the court every game. The lack of big men makes Lebron better than
he is.

OMG stop! Lebron would dominate if he played in the 80's. Physically DOMINATE. Too BIg, too Strong, too Fast, too Athletic.

"There was no one like him physically in our time slot,"

Bill Laimbeer on Lebron

Edit: Magic had a 30 inch vertical. Lebron has a 40 inch plus vertical is faster, quicker and plays better defense. Now imagine inserting this guy into the 80's.

You cannot sit here and honestly tell me this man would not dominate.
