OP bet an exacta, not an exacta box. But previous posters is explaining it as if it was a box bet.
That's because that's the only sensible explanation other than the OP being the only person around the country to bet an exacta on that race at Evangeline and the tracks taking out their vig.

Payout on 2 dollar exacta was 30.60.

A straight $2 win bet on 8-5 is $5.40 and 3-1 is $8.00, so if you won an exacta and bet $40, you should have made decent money. So, I'm pretty much aligning with others that you boxed the bet.

Did you use exacta box? If so, how many horses in the box?

Just two. Odds 8/5 and 3-1.
Seems pretty straight forward.

You could probably take that to be confirmation of a box bet, but then again, given the OP itself, additional confirmation from the man himself is probably needed...given that, obviously, only two horses are included in an exacta whether it's a box or not.

So, you spent 40 bucks and didn't bet a $40 exacta? If that's what you did, there lies the answer to the question

But I still think that an exacta box with an 8-5 and 3-1 horse would pay a profit...I can't find anything online to calculate what that payout would be for either order, but the $38 had to be wins above and beyond the initial bet, right?

if he did a straight $40 exacta, it would of paid $76ish bucks in total, he won +36
Now if he claims to get back $38 in total, then yes, he boxed and lost $2 on his total wager.
And for that exacta combination to pay $3.80, half the track had to have had it. U would expect a 2/5 favorite on top of 2nd nut favorite in small field for it to pay that low, so people were all over it.
8/5 and 3/1 should pay in the $12-20 region.(depends on number of horse)

I only got $38 back

Te payout has $1 bet pays $1.90
$20 x 1.90= $38.
Therefore he got $38 back
further down in the thread the OP states that only two horses involved in his bet, one at 8/5 and the other at 3/1. OP never directly answers whether he did a box or not but it is the only logical explanation.
