Horse race betting...why is my payout so low?

I bet $40 exacta at Evangline Downs that hit and I only got $38 back. I admit I am not very educated on all of this so can someone tell me how I lost $2 after hitting? Te payout has $1 bet pays $1.90

Did you give them the $40 when you made the bet?

Did you use exacta box? If so, how many horses in the box?

Just two. Odds 8/5 and 3-1. It was a tip on horseracing radio so I went with it. I knew the payout would be big just trying to understand why it is negative

8/5 and 3-1 is not going to produce a big payout, you were lucky to get most of your money back

You won $38. A track isn't going to pay out huge money on the two favorites, because, well, they're supposed to finish 1 and 2.
My buddy hit the trifecta and his $10 bet paid $867.
ETA: I edited my comment because I did some googles, and confirmed that you can in come cases not recoup your original wager (an example given is an exacta box with 6 or 7 horses...so I stand corrected. My mistake. Brain fart).

If you put up the $40 originally, you get that back plus the payoff of the race.

When you boxed the picks on 2 horses, you essentially made 2 $20 bets, one for each combination of win and place. One of the $20 bets won you $38, the other lost.
You've got to have a horse with higher odds come through for a box bet to pay off.

But he still didn't lose money on a winning bet. Are you the one who downvoted my post?

He lost $2 because when you box a exacta it is like making 2 bets. It was like making 2 $20 bets. He lost $20 on one of them. ON the other one, he got his $20 bet back plus the $18 he won.

No it's not. An exacta BOX is making two bets. An exacta is picking the finishers 1 and 2 in that order.

You just repeated what he said.

Sorry. I'm rushing and not explaining myself.
He said

But the OP said

OP bet an exacta, not an exacta box. But previous posters is explaining it as if it was a box bet.

This.
Why must people repeat the correct response right after, pretending they didn't see it.
Just say thanks and move the frick on.

I saw it, just read it too quickly and missed part of it. But my point still stands, OP said he placed an exacta bet, not an exacta box.
