Bree's is definitely a top 5 all time qb in my eyes.

He's the best numbers guy of his era. But he's debatably going down as the fourth best of his era behind Brady, Manning, and Rodgers.

Montana was the first to successfully run Walsh's West Coast offense. It was artwork ob the gridiron that had not been seen until that time. Its old school now, but innovative at the time and direclty led to the 4 SB wins.

ps Fouts was good too....

was looking at some of Marino's numbers and was surprised to see his career completion percentage only at 59%. I didn't watch Marino, how good was he?
He had the greatest passing arm I've ever seen. Once saw him throw a 40 yd TD by barely flicking his wrist, and w/o planting his back foot. There's a clip of him in practice throwing a TD pass underhanded behind his back.

Still, I would not list him as the tGOAT QB. I would rank Peyton and Montana higher -- they're the best I've ever seen.

tGOAT is probably Unitas. He changed the way the position is played. He played before the radical rules changes of the '70s (banning hit and run coverage but allowing OL to push off [making it easier to hold]) that opened up the passing game. Marino and all those who came after would profit through fatter stats.

eh, it's splitting hairs ... marino was a bad arse, though ... miami had no running game ... he was throwing it 40-50 times a game then, and i'm no miami/mareno fan ... manning is over-rated, simply because he's a nice guy (great qb, but not in the discussion at all for goat) ... you have brady, montana, unitas and maybe 1 or 2 others for the legit goat ... somebody like a staubach is always under-rated, and somebody like manning or farvre is always a bit over-rated ...

Couldn't have stated it better.

Sammy Baugh- virtually invented the modern QB position

Maybe, maybe not.

Norm Van Brocklin did more the Quarterback and style of play as a player and a coach than Baugh did. Baugh would be on my all time team probably, but to overlook what Van Brocklin in your statement might be simplifying it too much.

If Marino played today and was starting his career today, he would obliterate about every record ever set at qb.

I think Brady has already passed Montana and he isn't finished.

perhaps you did not actually see Montana play.

he was a genius.

I like Brady. I love the video of his first snap in a preseason game with New England. He was knocked to the turf. He jumps up and hustles back to the huddle, clapping his hands, "LET"S GO!!!" Brady roars.
Fire in the belly. Great leader.
Montana was better.

its a team game.
Tarkenton took 4 teams to the super bowl. brilliant. Lost to Bradshaw and his hall of fame team with Lynn Swann and a fabulous RB twice.

I thought Montana was better until the last two seasons. The way Brady has reinvented himself to be a better QB at 38 than he was at 33 puts him over the top. I'm clearly a homer though so ignore my simple opinion

Read the whole post and you will see where I put both of the guys you are saying on my list.

The Vikings were taken to the Super Bowl 3 times by Tarkenton and once by Joe Kapp.
