LOL so you can't hit the QB as he is throwing the football?

So a QB can just pump fake over and over to keep himself from getting hit?

They added the definition of a defenseless player last year. It really didn't change any rules. There are still legal ways to hit a defenseless player and illegal ways to do it. So if you use your shoulders to hit a QB in his chest while he's throwing the football, that's legal. If you lead with your helmet instead, that's a penalty whether the player is defenseless or not. The defenseless part comes into play when thinking about making it a flagrant foul with an ejection.

Without replay they're going to get a lot of these calls wrong and players are going to get ejected when they shouldn't be

That's why it's not an automatic ejection in high school. For me to eject a kid, I've got to see it from start to finish and be 100% sure. The definition of defenseless player is only in there to help provide guidelines to where an ejection may be warranted.

Football is such an imperfect sport. Constant rule changes. Baseball really hasn't changed in over 100 years.

High school officials don't need more judgement calls added into the game. Guaranteed from now on, any hard hit will be flagged regardless of proper technique or not.

As for the onside kick, instead of outlawing the kick just make the rule that a player trying to field the kick can not be hit while they are airborne. They must have both feet on the ground before the opposing side can make contact. The problem is with the players getting hit while in the air and exposed, not the kick itself.

I think the problem is that, once the ball has gone 10 yards and has touched the ground, everything is fair game. If the "pop-up" kick goes 20 yards, the player trying to field it may not know that it hit the ground and think that he is protected until he catches it and not jump for it. He is subject to getting blocked out of the way from the ball while he's not expecting to get hit.

If you make the rule that any ball contact with the ground within 2 yards of the free kick line, then it's obvious to everyone that the ball is fare game after the 10 yard mark. The reason I would go with this is that, with only 5 officials on the field, you don't have an official that is 100% focused on the ball unless it's an anticipated onside kick. 1 official is responsible for making sure no one, other than the kicker, is more than 5 yards behind the free kick line, and that no one crosses the free kick line before the ball is kicked.

So much for setting up that wall on the punt return. We'd put our badass leading the way every time and he'd destroy multiple defenders to the joy of the fans ohhs and ahhs

go figure that the best wall i've seen in person was West Monroe, and the best one i've seen on Friday Night Football highlights is John Curtis...

They called back 4-5 touchdowns the past 2 years. One ref was bragging, "That was an awesome call I made. The player wasn't looking at him". We asked, "Are we supposed to yell, 'Hey I'm about to block you. Please look at me so I don't get a flag!!!!'?'. He didn't have an answer. It's because of the Franklin Parish player that was killed on a blindside block on a punt return.
