High school football player dies after making a tackle

quote:

Atlanta (CNN) - A suburban Atlanta high school football player has died from injuries suffered while making a tackle during a scrimmage game, according to medical examiners. Deantre Turman's death came Friday after he made a tackle during a pre-season game, said Mike Alsip, a forensic investigator for the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office. The teenager broke his neck, Alsip said. The accident happened at a school in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, Georgia, according to CNN affiliate WSB. His coach, Glenn Ford, told the station that Turman -- a cornerback known to friends as "Tre Tre" -- went immediately limp and unresponsive after the play. Coaches and others tried without success to revive him during what Ford said was a 15-minute wait for an ambulance. The young athlete was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour and 15 minutes after the accident, according to Alsip. Turman, 16, was popular and well-regarded, Ford said. "People knew Tre Tre. They knew and loved him," Ford said, according to the station. Tarsha Keller, the woman who raised Turman since his mother died when he was just 4 years old, told WSB that the teen died doing what he loved. "Being the competitor and playing different sports made him happy," Keller told WSB. Deaths from high school football are exceedingly rare. Over the last 10 years, an average of fewer than three boys a year have died from on-field injuries playing high school football, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research at the University of North Carolina. No players died in 2012, the first time that had happened since 1994, according to the center.

As much as fans argue between fans in this sport, sometimes we lose perspective of how football players lay their bodies on the line for our entertainment. RIP

Was it a neck injury? The part you quoted didn't really say what happened.

Football as we know it will not exist in 20 years. There will either be radical rule changes, or it will be like boxing, a disreputable fringe sport played by people without other options.

I think you have a valid point.......it is a violent game and we often forget that. The speed that the professional game is played at is simply amazing.

Watch a College game on Saturday then go to new Orleans and watch a pro game the next fay - the speed difference is amazing.

The biggest concern I have is the lack of quality coaching in the high school and jr high programs - no fundamentals are being taught....

If any jr. High or high school players are reading this, remember, keep your head up, see what you hit. Try to put your face mask dead in the middle of their numbers.

Look at what you are hitting.

The vertebrae in you neck are shaped like a question mark. With you head up the natural curve in your neck flexes and absorbs the shock. With your head down the curve is taken out of your neck and any impact to your head is concentrated directly onto the vertebrae in you spine.

It is shocking the number of hits you see on Sundays with shitty technique. The problem is not the game. The problem is lack of education or should I say, the lack of comprehension.

Why would anyone go into coaching high school or jr high? The pay is terrible, the hours are long, and the parents are all smarter than the coach anyway. The people with true knowledge of athletics go get an OT baller job, and then coach Little Johnny's USSSA baseball or Youth Football team to the World Series championship.

Actually football at ALL levels is safer than its ever been.
(This tragedy aside) I would recommend to anyone "The War on Football" by Dan Flynn.

Researched the health and benefits of playing FB players vs non FB players. Also, completley blows up
the "studies" that NFL FB players commit suicide at higher rates and die at an earlier age than the average
male. Both are completly false. Also did studies comparing the health of HS FB players over a 30 yr period vs non HS players.

What's sad is that the people who predict the end of football as we know it are critical of rules changes that encourage more fundamentally sound and thus safe play...

Why? It's a legitimate point. Another poster complained about lack of good football coaching at the jr high and high school levels, and I gave the exact reasons as to why there is a "lack" of solid coaches at the schools.

What is wrong with that assessment?

What if the pay isn't an issue for some? I know several who've done MS/HS football coaching because they enjoy it.

Chopique is a supporter of HS and youth coaches. His comment was directed at the a-holes who are overly critical of them.
