Growing number of G-5 schools considers their own playoff

Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier is among a growing number of Group of 5 officials that favor adding a playoff specifically for the Group of 5 schools.
"It's time to have a realistic conversation about creating a playoff for the Group of 5," Frazier told ESPN. "Why not?"
It's been 32 years since a non-Power 5 team won a national championship (BYU in 1984) and it likely will never happen again in the current format. In the first three years of the College Football Playoff, a Group of 5 team has never ranked higher than No. 13 (Memphis in the 2015 initial rankings) by the CFB Playoff selection committee.

"There is absolutely no ability for us (teams in the Group of 5) to be in that national title conversation," Frazier said. "That's just reality. Anyone that says we can: that's a flat-out lie." The Group of 5 consists of schools from the American, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt conferences along with independents BYU, Army and UMass. Frazier said he believes a Group of 5 playoff could be financially rewarding to those schools. NBC, CBS and ESPN have interest in televising a Group of 5 playoff, an industry source said. "As long as the financial agreement that currently exists with the CFB Playoff remains and we had the opportunity to package a Group of 5 championship, why wouldn't we want to do it?" a Group of 5 official said. "It would spread the exposure to all five conferences, rather than just the one conference champion that plays in a New Year's 6 bowl."
quote:
merican Conference commissioner Mike Aresco has no interest in it either. "The answer is an emphatic no," Aresco said. "We compete for national championships like anyone else in FBS, including the Power 5, and have no interest in any kind of separate championship."

I wish that the Power-5 could have a relegation system similar to European soccer.

I mean they could go down to FCS

*relegation
That would be pretty sweet but wouldn't mesh well with the conferences

And there shouldn't be. Sorry, but those schools may be able to pull the occasional upset against the big boys, but in now way would they be able to compete for a full schedule where depth plays a role. Let's see how Western Michigan plays against Wisconsin this bowl season.

I actually kind of like the idea from a spectator standpoint, but I think the ones saying "no" are doing it holding out hope that when the P5 schools expand to a 6 or 8 team playoff, the highest ranked G5 school will get an auto invite. And that's more important long-term. Their own playoff would essentially make them FBC schools and would likely devalue all 5 leagues and their schools/teams.

Aresco knows damn well that they'd never make bowl dollars in this. Ever.

Why not do both?
If there is a G5 team worthy of the CFP, they go there. If not, then they go to the G5 playoff.

Eventually we are going to get to a point where the power-conferences will have their own league, with an extended playoff (6 to 12 teams).

And they will pay plate differently than the entire NCAA.
It'll have to be the way forward.

Interesting concept.
I'd like to see a rough draft.
Would we keep the current standings or start a separate poll for G5 teams?
What about the cellar dwellers in P5 conferences? Could they move down while the top G5 teams move up like they do with the Premiere League?
I could see it helping with recruiting too.
A G5 playoff would sure as hell beat watching 100 bowl games involving teams at or below .500 and about 6 that actually matter. I forgot what bowl game it was, but it was played at the Ray's baseball stadium. I don't think there was 2,000 people there. It was empty.

This is what needs to happen

Which would be fine for football. I just don't want to see that happen in basketball or baseball.

Why not do both?

And if they win will you deploy the same tired "well of course they can get up for one game" excuse?

That could be a solution to the "exhibition" bowl game situation. Power 5 teams and group of 5 teams do not schedule each other during regular season. Only play each other in bowls.

I think Notre dame is considered power 5.

Can someone explain to me what "Group of 5" means?

But the question is that is a team like Houston & Boise going to make more money in a G-5 playoff or a shite-tier bowl vs the bottom of power-5.
South Florida had a good season and they are rewarded with a spot against South Carolina.
5 conferences are battling over one New Years 6 bowl . I'd argue this is more about creating something that would generate more revenue than the current shite-tier bowls.
