Figures it's from Grantland...only Bill Simmons thinks "everyone thought" those Rockets were going to be the next dynasty and the Lakers were done in the Western Conference.

No they didn't and no they weren't. I remember, Lakers losing to the Rockets in the playoffs was seen as a choke and we were shocked. No surprise the Lakers were back on top the next year.

You mean Laker fans didn't. I don't know about people thinking the Lakers where done, but with 2 young stars and a pretty deep team, it looked like the Rockets were on the rise in the West like the Pistons in the East.

You think that Simmons has an agenda of pushing the rockets teams of the 80's as a failed dynasty...???

Like I said, so dumb. Abrams doesn't need stories forced on him.

The only time I'm sorry for it is that every time we would play Drexler after, say, five years in the league, he'd just stick it in my ear. If there was a record to be set, he would do it.

That is so relevant. Let's stay on topic, this is about uncovering grantland conspiracies. Who is the next NBA team that Simmons will have his cronies prop up?

Yup

Doesn't change the fact that Zamoro is a huge west coast nutthugger though. And I've always despised the Lakers, Yankees, etc

I did. Ralph Sampson was supposed to be the second coming. Everyone thought so. Hakeem was seen as the other guy -- raw yet talented. But Sampson was considered a once in a generation talent. And yes, the Two Towers thing was HUGE. I don't think people thought the Lakers were done, but the West was the far weaker conference at the time, and suddenly the Rockets looked like genuine foil for the Lakers in the same way the Hawks were for the Celtics (or the Sixers, earlier).

OK, then Jordan happened and Sampson blew out his knees. It's hard to remember this, but the NBA used to be built around the principle that you had to have a big man to win. The Sixers had Moses, the Celtics had Parrish and Walton, and the Lakers had Kareem. It was seen as one of those things you had to have, like a star QB in the NFL now.

Jordan changed how we build basketball teams. We haven't had a team with a dominant center win since Olajuawon did it, and he was a throwback to the 80s (ok, Chandler and the Mavs as well).

Sampson was considered godlike. He was the next Kareem.

Completely relevant.

Means your not old enough to have sufficient perspective for this topic, sports or just about everything.

To educate you neophyte...Simmons has been talking about this shite for years. Propping up this Rockets team...because his GOAT team...1986 Celtics (read his Big Book of Basketball) never got to play the Lakers...and at the time, people said...well, you didn't beat Magic that year...so ever since then Simmons has been propping up this Rockets squad as some great unfilled dynasty that his great Celtics squad toppled. He needs those Rockets to be greater than a one-year upset of the Lakers to confirm GOAT status on the 1986 Celtics.

Nothing but a homer article mandated by Bill during their Grantland writer meetings.

I saw them in person and if the team had stayed in tack, not losing Lucus, Wiggins and Lloyd to drugs and Sampson stays healthy they should have at least challenged the Lakers the next couple of years, like Detroit did to Boston in the East eventually passing the Lakers like the Blazers ultimately did.

Though I do agree Simmons props up the 86 Celtics team to an absurd degree, and he's spent two decades writing hatchet pieces on Kareem. The Lakers were better. And Kareem was awesome.

But I'm a Sixers/Dr. J guy. Fo fo fo!
