1989 Niners by a slim margin over the 1984 Niners.

Outscored their opponents 126-26 during the postseason.

Think about this...

"Joe Montana averaged 9.1 yards per attempt with 13 starts that season. The figure for three-game starter Steve Young -- 10.9 yards per attempt -- was even more ridiculous. Drew Brees set a career high at 8.5 yards per attempt during his historic season. Tom Brady's average was 8.3 during his historic 2007 season. Dan Marino was at 9.0 in his 1984 career season. None could match the 49ers' top two quarterbacks during this special season."

Walsh later regretted retiring.

Had the #1 rated offense that year and the #3 rated defense.

Montana at his peak.

1984 Niners would be #2...

quote:

The 1984 49ers became the first team to win 15 games since the regular season was expanded in 1978. Held opponents to 10 or fewer points in nine of 19 games, including the postseason. Allowed the fewest points in the league (227), and all four starters in the secondary (Ronnie Lott, Carlton Williamson, Dwight Hicks and Eric Wright) were voted to the Pro Bowl. Befuddled opponents with their then-new West Coast offense, which emphasized a short, horizontal passing game that allowed them to stretch defenses and open up holes for big plays. Set Super Bowl records for most net offensive yards and most passing yards, by Joe Montana, (both marks were broken later) in beating the Dolphins, 38-16.

They were ranked #2 in scoring and #1 in defense.

West coast bias much??????

The 1985 Bears had a much better playoff run than anyone in history... The 1986 Giants area close 2nd... The 1989 Niners were a great team but beat a shitty Denver team in the SB........

1985 Pats 10th in scoring offense and 6th in scoring defense. Finished 3rd in the AFC East Division. Seeded 5th in the AFC playoffs.

1989 Denver Broncos 8th in scoring offense and 1st in scoring defense.

Finished 1st in AFC West Division. Seeded 1st in the AFC playoffs.

unbelievable defense, best I've seen in my lifetime. The offense, however, was atrocious.

I'll add the 93 cowboys and 94 49ers.

1986- Giants 39 Broncos 20
1987- Redskins 42 Broncos 10
1989- 49ers 55 Broncos 10

That still doesn't change the fact that the '85 New England Patriots were hardly any better than the '89 Denver Broncos.

The New England Patriots got their touchdown when the score was 44-3. The Broncos got their garbage touchdown when the score was 41-3.

lol the 89 Broncos were a good bit better than the 85 Pats.

I'm not sure why there is such an obsession over the 85 Bears. Maybe it's because of the Super Bowl Shuffle? They were a great team and all but this idea that they were head and shoulders above every other great team of the era is just silly. If they were so good then why did they only make one SB appearance?

it shows a pattern that Denver was incompetent on the big stage for whatever reason.

even in their Super Bowl losing streak, the Bills had a real shot to win at least one of those games.

Denver got jobbed for 5 TD's in one quarter by Doug Williams who had a cup of coffee on the big stage. So what in the hell would you expect from Denver when facing the great Joe Montana?

it was a great performance by the 49ers but Denver just threw out the red carpet for their opponent each time it seemed like.

Don't know why everyone is reducing this to one game...the SB...

But...in scoring/defense differential..

1986 Broncos - 9th
1987 Broncos - 5th
1989 Broncos - 2nd

1989 was the Broncos best team - seeded #1 overall in the AFC playoffs...and the Niners blew them out worse than the Bears blew-out a wild-card hapless NE team that got quite a few lucky bounces to even make the game. See Raider game.

So USC 2005 is indeed the GOAT too?

Finishing the deal - even in the final seconds - doesn't matter.

Agreed.

Meh both the 89 Broncos and 85 Pats were 11-5 and the Pats were a more talented and dangerous team team

You're full of crap then.

Because I watched that year and 1985.

And no one would have ever said that.

All year...Denver was money. The Pats were considered a fluke team.

It just shows you're a young one and never even watched an NFL - you claim to want to talk about.
