LSU is in the discussion because of the schedule. When you go 13-1, beat 3 top 6 teams, including the winners of 2 BCS conferences, you are in the discussion. The last game can knock them out, but they deserve mention.
Also when you win all of those games by blowout. And while LSU had a poor pass game, the running game was unbelievably good and the defense was otherworldly. The team just relentlessly wore you down.
AJ played the game of his life in January and good on him for doing so, but that no more exposed Matthieu than LSU "exposed" Darron Thomas as being overrated. McCarron made some absurd throws in that game. Matthieu has now become remarkably underrated as know-it-alls try and discount his cover skills, which were pretty darn good if not on Claiborne's level. But this "Mathieu couldn't cover" crap is poor revisionism by people pretending to possess insight that they really don't have.

i think LSU could argue most impressive season (until UGA maybe, or the title game for sure) accomplishment
but when we argue "best team" people get leery

2005 USC? Come on, even USC fans admit the D was bad. They gave up 42 to Fresno and FSU threw 4 or 5 ints. That was not a good D. Now the 2003 and 2008 teams? Those were great D's. 2008 D was sick. I'd put it right there with Bama last year.
They played 9 of the top 35 scoring offenses(5 on the road 1 neutral) that year including 6 of the top 12 and held every team below their average except Fresno.
It doesn't matter if you have the greatest D ever you are going to give up points against that schedule

long before the title game, criticisms of his coverage were discussed. it just became popular after 1/9/12
he's mediocre in coverage. he's like a slower dre bly (tiny guy going for big play or bust)
teams had already begun to neutralize him somewhat while on offense in 2011

No, they didn't. That's my point. He was still excellent. They threw at him, and he picked the ball off and returned it for scores. AJ McCarron was the only guy who "exposed" him and if you watch the game -- his throws are friggin' PERFECT. He's throwing into a small window where only his receiver could get it. It wasn't a failure of coverage, it was a QB playing at a near professional level. Good for McCarron. But if the flaw in coverage is "if you have a QB who will make NFL-level throws and perfectly place the ball" then you've exposed nothing. You just have a great QB (or a QB playing great).
2011 LSU certainly belongs in the discussion to anyone who isn't so ridiculously biased like you are. (In this case, the bias is you need LSU to not be very good to reflect your assumed genius -- like you said, you had been saying all year -- only reality conflicted with the all-knowing Gospel of SFP). Thank God they lost so you could once against assert your spectacular football mind and how you were the one who saw the Truth the whole time, if only we had listened.

Texas averaged 50.9 points a game. They scored 41 on USC - not a championship D when you only allow 9 points less than their average...they scored 42 on Colorado and 45 on Oklahoma.
Verlander is kinda right though...'05 USC played 7 teams than ranked in the Top 25 of Scoring Offense in 2005.

when?
most of his damage was on special teams in the 2nd half of 2011. his most effective defensive play is blitzing off the edge. that wasn't working well by the end of the year

1.Texas scored 70 on Colorado not 42(EDIT scored 42 in the regular season 70 in the Big12 championship)
2.USC played 8 teams in the top 25 scoring, 6 in the top 12, and the 35th ranked offense Hawaii.

they also scored 70 on CU in the Big 12 CG and OU was 8-5. Not exactly a ringing endorsement to compare USC's D to those 2

Was Fresno one of those 7? Serious question.

Bama 2011
only loss was a 3 point OT loss in which they dominated the majority of the game
LSU 2011
only loss was a SHUTOUT and complete humiliation on offense, in an almost practical home game

How were the 2008 O's USC played ranked? Holding 8 of 12 to single digits and 2 others to 10 is pretty stout in the Pac 12.
What was Hawaii's O ranked the year they played UGA in the Sugar Bowl?

so much fail in one post, sorry, only beating 3 teams with winning records needs to be mentioned if you are claiming a team that did not win its own division is up there with the greats.
