exactly why i said 2001 Miami and 2004 USC would have handled LSU

2001 Miami would have handled most anybody.

LSU is in the discussion because of the schedule. When you go 13-1, beat 3 top 6 teams, including the winners of 2 BCS conferences, you are in the discussion. The last game can knock them out, but they deserve mention.

a great run D and really good QB and receivers could have beat LSU handily

define handily. Funny that one game proves everything to SFP, but all the others are outliers. Your hypothetical team better have a great OL too.

I think overall CFB was down a little last year compared to past years. 2005, 2006 even 2000 i think there were more deep, better teams.

I'll stick with the 86 and 2002 Canes. 05 USC just was too bad on D, maybe the GOAT of CFB offense though.

If we are going objectively than the answer is 88 Miami they played the toughest schedule EVER and only lost to undefeated Notre Dame. I didn't put them on my original list because I haven't really seen any games of them.

That's all fair and rational.

I would say '05 USC could be in any game against any of the greats because their O was insane...but their D was so mediocre you could never count on it to make those crucial stops and so I wouldn't bet on them - they're a curiosity of what if...but that ND game is perfect example when USC went ahead and then ND drove right down the field in a minute to seem to seal the win...because USC's offense was ridiculous, the day was saved...but frankly, you simply need a better D when championships are on the line.

LSU beat THREE BCS bowl winners, two of them by blowout and all on the road (though one was a neutral site). That's an astoundingly tough schedule. And that's leaving off another win over a top 5 team in Arkansas.

And did this with basically horrible QB play.

i said long before we knew we were playing bama again that the game against a big opponent that we didn't get a magical special teams play (i don't even think i included defense), we'd lose

LSU was a SEVERELY flawed team in 2011

we had less than good QB play, but were exceptional at every other facet.

How is that SEVERELY flawed?

excellent FG kicking, punting, run defense, pass defense, run blocking. Played with swag and ripped the souls out of opponents in the 2nd half.

We lost to another team that was pretty much equal but had a better QB/game plan.

Why can't it just be that Bama played better in that game, but LSU 2011 is still an all time great 1 loss team?

2011 LSU played one of the toughest schedules in the history of CFB. As I said before... they would easily beat some of these teams being listed.

I'd put up 1998 OSU against a lot of these teams.

Blew the game to MSU but aside from that they were pretty dominant

Beat 5 top 25, 2 top 10, 4 top 11 teams during the year.

'05 USC defense gave up on average...21.3 points and 344.7 yards per game. Usually didn't matter because they averaged 50 points and 580 yards per game.

Too bad they went up against Texas who also averaged 50 points and over 500 yards a game.

USC's O by and large did their job in the title game...scoring 38 points and they had more yards (574) than Texas (so USC hit their average) and time of possession...but USC had 1 extra turnover (Bush lateral - momentum killer) and the D couldn't save the day at the end.

You can't always play perfect on offense and when they didn't the USC D wasn't up to the task saving the day.

Don't exaggerate. LSU played one of the tougher schedules for a top 5 team the past 20 years but go look up pretty much any Notre Dame or Miami schedule from the 80's and its not even close

Probable would of beaten Tennessee if the voters put them in the game.

I think the 86 team was better. Never heard anyone say that about their schedule. ND and FSU finished 1 and i think 4. UM was 9-2-1 and LSU 8-4 (we won SEC but really weren;t that great) not sure about the rest of 88 Miami schedule.

Still their run from 86-92 is pretty impressive:
3 MNC's, 3 #2 finishes with only loss to the MNC (86, 88, 92) and a #3 finish in 90.

Anybody who's ever looked in to it could tell you that its the toughest schedule ever. They beat #1 and #4 plus the Big10, Southwest and SEC champions

because they are coached by Les Miles is my guess.

The passing game was garbage, no doubt, but they were solid every where else, its ridiculous to say that team was "extremely" flawed. Not perfect by any means, but only LSU fans would say that team was "extremely" flawed. Compare it to 2010 Auburn, they were carried by 2 exceptional players.

we had a shitty passing game that only worked off play action. our QBs were either horrible and mobile or mediocre and a statue. our complete inability to pass against a good D crippled LSU

dude, Miami had some horrible schedules in the 80's, spiced up with a couple of big games.

well then apparently no one I've ever read or talked to has never looked into because I've never heard anyone but you say that. There's a lot of filler on that schedule. I was at LSU in 88, we won the SEC cause we beat Auburn in the famous EQ game, but we really weren't that great.

2005 USC? Come on, even USC fans admit the D was bad. They gave up 42 to Fresno and FSU threw 4 or 5 ints. That was not a good D. Now the 2003 and 2008 teams? Those were great D's. 2008 D was sick. I'd put it right there with Bama last year.
