Randy Livingston. It started with getting injured at the Top 28 tournament? 2x High school player of the year.

You can add another Livingston to the list I would like to have seen what Shaun Livingston could have done without the injury.

Doesn't exactly fit this thread, but if Ichiro played his whole career in America he could have a shot at a few records.

didn't Sabonis sign with Spain after the USSR collapse instead of Portland? I was kind of young when that happened, so do not recall.

He could have played at a high level in the NBA, but chose not to. The strange thing is, like said earlier, he was still pretty good when he came to the NBA as a shell of his former self.

Michael Jordan. Could the bulls have won 8 straight if he didn't retire? ... Or 10 if he would have kept playing after the '98 season?

Len Bias is an obvious one.

Sam Bowie comes to mind too. Injuries started in college but he still managed that #2 draft pick. Had a 10 year career that had about 4 successful years (coincidentally 4 that he missed no more than 20 games during) but was mostly marred by injuries. Dude was a badass shot blocker.

But that was 5 years. Most Fighters would have gone through the same thing. I still think he did pretty well after this though

But he was never again as great as he was when he left (while still improving). Thus we never saw the best of him. Which is the title of the thread, yes?

If anything this probable worked out well for Ali as far as legacy goes. Think about it the top heavyweights in the 3 years Ali couldn't fight were Jimmy Ellis, Joe Frazier, Jerry Quary and Oscar Bonavena 4 guys he would beat later on anyway. Ali also probable fights Frazier earlier in his career and beats him handedly and there is no trilogy.

Okay. Great for his legacy, but not so good for his current physical and mental state. If Ali fights Frazier in '68 with no layoff, he gets hit very little and wins easily on points. So, yeah, no fight of the century. No thrilla in manilla. But likely no Parkinsons either.

Sabonis is a good call.

It wasn't the Frazier fights that messed him up it was Larry Holmes, Trevor Berbick and Leon Spinks x2 fights he had no business being in and got hit flush in the head more than he ever did against Frazier

False. Watch the fights. The third Frazier fight is widely considered the most brutal heavyweight fight of all time for a very good reason. I actually have difficulty watching it. That fight had a lot to do with it. The subsequent third fight against Ken Norton certainly didn't help.

He was diagnosed with Parkinsons BEFORE the Holmes and Berbick fights. He was taking El Dopa while training for the Holmes fight, which is why he was able to lose the weight so quickly. Those fights should have never taken place.

Can't believe we're 7 pages in and nobody has mentioned SHAQ!!!

As good as he was, if he had half the drive/work ethic of a Kobe of MJ, he easily would have been the met dominant force the NBA has ever seen.

Ken Griffey Jr. After he left Seattle he was hurt more than he wasn't.
