what if he doesn't go play minor league baseball?

I understand this but he couldn't get much better than he was except for a couple more titles. and if tehy had won 6 straight he would have quit then. IMO.

Muhammad Ali- He missed three years of his prime due to his dispute with the US government over Vietnam.

Greg Cook- There are a lot of people who consider Cook's rookie season to be the greatest ever by a professional QB. Bill Walsh considered him the greatest talent he ever coached at QB. However due to arm problems, his career was basically over after his rookie year.

Mantle blew out his knee in the '51 Series.

Played almost his entire career with a bum knee.

So, no...we never got to see the best he could have been.

I say Greg Oden. Too bad injuries killed his career cause he would've been deadly on that Portland team with Aldridge and Wallace along with Brandon Roy (another what if). I believe he would've been a pretty damn good center along the lines of Tyson Chandler.

Hopefully we aren't saying this about Sydney Crosby soon.

What makes you think he wasn't healthy in his prime? His knees gave out on him towards then but that doesn't mean they weren't good when he was dominating.

His leg injuries date back to high school, including osteomylitis.

He also broke his leg trying to field a fly ball from Willie Mays when he was a rookie.

Mick was never "fully" healthy.

People wonder why I put him in my TOP 5 all-time as far as RB'S but he has to be there.

Really going out on a limb there putting Gale Sayers in your top 5 RBs.

He probably would have been capped by some mobsters and not gotten his last 3 titles.

Sean Taylor. I truly believe he would've been a top 3 safety of all time.

This may not go over well but I am going to say Michael Jordan.

I think had he not taken the time off from the Bulls that they would have possibly won as many championships in a row as the Celtics did. He very well could have retired with double digit championships.

And won the triple crown in 1956. AMAZING. I think Mantle did all he could. The only thing most people would have wanted was that THe MICK broke Ruths record in 1961.And he was injuried that year. And still hit 54 hr's.

not sure i like the Utley or MAntle answers. I think both were at least able to hit their peak before they succumbed to their injuries.

Utley was the best 2B in the MLB for a few years. And we all know how good Mantle was. He won 3 MVPs and came in 2nd 3 other times. Did we really not see the best of these guys?

We'll never really know.

Mick is probably one of the most popular answers to the question, because nearly everyone from his era and otherwise said he would have been better if he was healthy.

But of course, he still achieved so much, you have to give pause and say, "Are you sure about that?"

eta: Koufax definitely qualifies, because his career was absolutely cut short at the age of 30. Who knows how much he'd have accomplished if he could play until he was 37-38 years old.

Koufax would qualify. He was great, but you dont see him on the top of many stats, and he probably would be with a longer career.
