Grand Canyon U For Profit DI Athletics

Someone posted about GCU beating Houston on the rant. They aren't yet NCAA tournament eligible, but they are in the WAC and actually have a pretty good resume. (10-2, also beat SDSU) Dan Majerle is their coach. I'm pretty sure they actually pay Cox to air the games.
So basically, this school uses DI athletics as a marketing tool to commit its usual for-profit student loan schemes. These for-profit schools are the scum of the earth, preying on the most vulnerable.
Revenue generated by the athletic departments ends up in the hands of shareholders. Let's say Grand Canyon makes a Cinderella tournament run in 2018. Any one of us could financially benefit because of the team's run.
It just seems weird. Thoughts?

I just noticed them being ranked top 25 in my former sport... Googled them maybe 2 weeks ago. Seemed like a lot of foreign athletes in my sport, not highly uncommon... but they were slap full with them.

1. Don't have a problem with it.
2. Being in the modern WAC is not a marketing tool.
3. They are in the process of becoming nonprofit again. LINK
4. Why do you care?

Grand Canyon is investing hard into their athletics.
For instance, their men's soccer coach was a very successful MLS coach with FC Dallas.
Phoenix is a great city too and easy to recruit to.
They are funding hard and will climb the sporting ladder quickly.
Their AD is pushing hard to become relevant.

The "odd" thing is the fact we mixed professional minor leagues with higher education in the first place.
Not that I'm complaining or anything

Stop assuming that something is evil because it dares to make money. Profit-- the horror the horror!
Is the supermarket the scum of the earth? Is the clothing store? Is Microsoft?
Do you work for free? If not, are you then also the scum of the earth?

Well, they are.
Meanwhile, the government uses guns to extract money from your pocket which pays the salaries of public universities and I'm not supposed to be outraged about that?
You need to step out of your john oliver marxist bubble world and understand that profit is not a bad thing.
I can't believe this madness.

Houston is not very good. Grand Canyon does have a nice win over San Diego St. We beat GCU 111-63 earlier this season. Watching that beating, I wonder how that team even won a game

If you do background research into the school they are different than most for profit schools (GCU started as a traditional brick and mortar university) and as said above they are currently in the plans to change that status due to the negative stigma surrounding "for profit" schools.
They are hoping that building a solid D1 athletic program will help legitimize the university, raise funds and help the school transition from a for profit university to a traditional university.

Not all for-profit schools are cut from the same cloth. GCU is a lot different than Corinthian Colleges.

The current WAC (basically just New Mexico State and a bunch of stupid kids) is pretty pathetic - Grand Canyon isn't the only member institution lacking accreditation, either.

It's not recognized by NCA.
Just because you say you are doesn't mean you are.
