Was in Raleigh for some meetings last week. On Thursday morning I was bringing a friend to the airport. Since it's situated between Raleigh and Durham we left early and went into Duke to check it out. I had even called the week before and was told that it's open M-F, 9-5.

So we got there and went into the museum (which is VERY nice as you can imagine). Walked through there and then went towards the doors into the concourse of Cameron Indoor. Got to them and they were locked. I then approached the gentleman in charge and asked if I had gotten bad info. He confirmed that I did and that until last year the arena was indeed open at those times, but no more. He was incredibly cool though, saying "...but I can let you in." So he actually walked us through the concourse and into the arena. We talked for a bit and he told us to just walk around and help ourselves out when done.

Never have been much of a Duke fan, but I do like unique atmospheres and buildings. I have to say it was very cool to be in there. Walked halfway around on the inside along the seats. Seemed like I could actually kinda feel the history, as corny as that is. We were both very happy we went.

Crazy thing is I'm sure we would not have gone there if I had gotten good info. Glad I didn't.

Pretty cool story. I want to go up there for a game.

Toured Duke a little over 10 years ago and they took us inside Cameron Indoor. An intramural team was practicing on one half of the court so I was able to walk around on the other half. Was pretty cool. Much smaller than you'd think watching on TV. Whole campus was gorgeous.

Every time I think of Cameron Indoor, I wish LSU had just added onto the Gym Armory.

I couldn't believe how tiny it was. But like you said once you go in and see all the wood and the jerseys hanging from the rafters...just awesome

Went by there this summer and they had construction going on between Cameron and Brooks Field(Football Field). The Intramural dept. next door would not let us in. I walked through the construction and saw an open back door but was caught and asked to leave. Sucked being so close but yet so far!

Great stadium and amazing atmosphere. I'll never forget getting a chance to walk onto the court there during halftime of a game.

There is something very powerful about Duke. Wonderful place.

Summer, '94. My Dad and I took a road trip to a bunch of schools (UVA, Richmond, UNC, App St, Wake, and Duke).

Duke was the first school we went to. Campus was quiet, but we walked around and just so happens that Cameron's front doors were wide open. We walked right in, no one was around. There was a ballrack, my Pops grabbed a ball and walked right on to the floor and took a shot. I was blown away! We shot around for five minutes - I can say I've hit a three at Cameron - put the ball back and walked out.

Amazingly enough, both Lawrence Joel (Wake's arena) and the Dean Smith Center's doorswere open too. Sadly no rack was to be found and we were asked to leave by security shortly after we walked in both places.

Yeah that's a couple of comments like that. Oddly enough the size is about what I expected. Very cool. I love intimate type settings like that.

Yep. Agreed. I also got a kick out of the wood paneling of the concession stands.

That's awesome!! Yeah that was one mild drawback for us. They were prepping the court for the Womens tourney game they were hosting, so we weren't able to go on it obviously.

Yeah man that does suck. Sorry about that timing.

I just don't get the nostalgia for shitty sports venues. Wrigley is an absolute dump. Cameron is no better than the PMac. Fenway should have been blown up 50 years ago. Walking through a stadium with no game going on has no meaning to me.

Size-wise it was about what I expected as well. But it's amazing how huge the Dean Smith Center is compared to it. That these two schools are such rivals, but are so different really is wild. It's not like Harvard/Yale, OSU/Mich.

Yeah most of those places are dumps but at the same time I think the general vibe in all of them is outstanding. You just don't get that feeling anywhere else.

The bathrooms were literally exploding the last time I was at Wrigley. Like shite was pouring into the concourse

UNC grad here, my daughter had a volleyball clinic at Cameron Indoor a year or so ago and while my views about the school need no explanation, even if you are a casual basketball fan such as I, it's a pretty special place. Very small and intimate. If you are in the area it's a must see.

I was in school when the Smith Center opened and went to the last games at Carmichael..it was small and cramped like Cameron, but was loud and fun. The older venues didn't have the amenities of today's arenas but part of the fun of going to a game is the feel of the place, and in the case of a place like Wrigley or Fenway knowing that guys like Babe Ruth once played there.
