More range time

This is what finally made the game "fun" for me. Many visits to the range until I could hit most clubs consistently, but especially the driver. Just forced myself to do it.

The one thing you can't really work on at the range is short/sand game... so mine still blows. But the game is more fun hitting a 9 into a green instead of a 3-iron after slicing a weak drive 50 yards off the fairway.

However, after reading some books on the mental aspect of the game, I've seen improved scores

Noted.

So far the plan is.

More range time instead of forcing in 18 with 3 hours of sunlight left.
Mental aspect of golf books.
Short pre-shot routine. Like shooting free throws, dribble dribble spin then shoot.
Practice routine, where is it LSU?
If i still suck, take lessons.

If you have any good friends who are scratch or low handicap players, try and play with them as much as you can. That helped me tremendously last year.

Obviously chipping and putting will be the part of the game that yields more strokes. In order to become a better player you need to work on all aspects of your game but the most important are(in order which is most to least)

Speed putting
Chipping(all aspects)
20 yards - 75 yards
Ball striking

Ive seen terrible ball strikers shoot even par because they can maneuver around the green so well.

Some key drills for each include;

Speed Putting

Square drill

Place 4 tees in a perfect square 3 foot away from each other on ends. You need to find a place on the practice green in which you can have downhill an uphill 20-30 footers. You will hit 50 putts from uphill and 50 putts from downhill.
Start at 20 feet and hit 10 putts trying to make the ball stop at the back of the square. Hit all 10 puts while looking at the back of the square only, not the ball. Now hit 10 balls trying to stop them on the front part of the square without looking at the ball and focusing on the front part of the square.
Move back to 30 foot and do same.
Now switch to other side and do same.
After you hit your 80 putts go back to original area and you can start looking at the ball. Hit 2 balls from 20 feet trying to stop first one at front of square and second at back square. Do this one more time and move to 30 foot. Hit one ball and make it land in the middle of the square. Go to other side and do exact same.

This will make you a great speed putter. Then you focus on breaks. Which if you would like, I could also tell you a drill for that.

Ill add the other 3 soon.

Chipping

Latter Drill

Find a place on the chipping green with about 30 foot of distance between the fringe you are on and the other side. Place a tee 8 feet on the green. You have to get as many balls as you can inside the tee and back fringe. The hard part is each ball much travel past the prior ball. If you hit one that doesnt reach the tee to start, you have to start over. If you hit one over the back of the green, you start over. In 22 feet you should be able to get 8-10 balls every time. If you can get 8-10 10 times in a row, you can feel confident about your chipping feel for distances.

One Key about chipping is to have your feet close together about 1-1.5 feet apart, left foot(for a righty) open to your target(left of it), and weight stays about 80% on your front side without shifting at all. To hit the ball higher and softer, open your left foot even more and aim clubhead at target, this will add loft to the club and cause you to slide under it better. You can use your same chipping motion you would regularly use.

20-75 Yards

The Andrew Loupe Drill mixed with towels...lol

Towel Drill

Get to a driving range and bring about 7 towels. Go all the way to the left or right and pace 20 yards(place towel open) pace another 10(place towel open) do this to 70 then go 5 more for 75.

The key to a great feel game from these yardages is to rehearse Loupes swing. His arms are very close to his body throughout his swing. This makes a very good short game wedge player because you never flip at it and use your shoulders more. Practice flying the balls onto each towel. My range is always full of towels so be sure to pick your towels up after.

I have to get a little more in depth for some ball striking drills and dont really want to tonight. But I will give a break putting drill.

Break Putting

Gate Drill

Find a breaking putt that breaks about 1 foot from 10-15 feet. The ball should be trickling in as it hits the cup. Find one that breaks left and one right but we will focus on one at a time.

Roll some putts and see where your aim should be. Place 2 tees right where you putted from(one at heel and one at toe of putter. Place a tee on the where the aim is(right to left breaker place tee 1 foot on right side of hole if it is a 1 foot breaker). Now roll more putts and see exactly where it breaks into hole. Place two tees about hole length apart 2 inches from the hole as if the ball has to travel through these 2 tees perfectly to make it. Not go about 3 inches more and place 2 tees about 2 holes apart making it as if the ball should travel perfectly through these 2 as well to make it.

Practice never looking at the hole but at the tee you placed to line your putt on. You want to look up at your putt after hitting it to really see the break of the putt take place and get your confidence for reading and putting on breaks. You will probably find you need to aim a little farther out on left to righters(righty).

The towel drill seems perfect for me. I was struggling big time from 100 and in Sunday. Probably cost me 3-5 strokes not hitting it close from there. Thanks for the drills

Honestly, I had to move away from drills, especially those that required a lot of preparation for little result.

Instead, I focus on what the goal of the drill was, and work on that instead. Just a lot less crap to deal with
