Beard waited 11 days after he agreed to coach the Rebels on March 27 until his five-year contract was approved by the University of Nevada Board of Regents on Friday. He was officially the Rebels’ coach for six days.

Beard spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Tech, and his three daughters live in Texas. Texas Tech is believed to be his dream job, and he spoke glowingly about the university when he took his Arkansas-Little Rock team there in December.

Totally can appreciate his ties to Lubbock, but imho, UNLV a slightly better platform, despite lesser conference affiliation, and being now far removed from Tark glory days.
Sure, TT is located in Texas a fertile recruiting state, plays in the much stronger Hoops conference, and has more rabid students.
Just feel that UNLV if with the right HC, and if with strong OOC marquee game schedule, plus Thomas & Mack packed, could get back to landing top talent, especially with Findlay Prep in town.
Then again, Rollie, Bayno, Spoon, Lon,etc..couldn't get traction..so who knows?

Wow. Might as well say "frick contracts" , everyone is a free agent in coaches world. This is another example of why the waiting 1 year after a transfer is complete bullshite.

Kruger had righted the ship though and probably would've had them as a perennial tourney team if OU hadn't snagged him. As long as none of the Cali Pac-12 schools emerge as powers UNLV's got a shot to get back to the bigtime.

One would think that Dan Marjele is getting close to a job like UNLV

That article says Marvin Menzies from NM St. He interviewed before they hired Beard and pulled his name out of consideration for the job, probably because it became obvious they wanted Beard.

So texas tech wouldn't have to "buyout" his contract? He is just free to leave after signing a 5 year contract?

Makes sense as far as recruiting at the same division and general area.

Tech would pay UNLV $1 million but they're getting $900,000 for Tubby so really good deal for Tech.

Humiliating for unlv....and the only time you will see Texas tech and dream job in the same sentence.

Not everyone wants the biggest and most glamorous jobs. His family is rooted in Texas, the expectations are low, and he is comfortable there. It sounds weird to us but it makes perfect sense. Tbh, if I was a coach I'd want a job like that rather than something more high profile.

Tech is more high profile than Vegas is right now. UNLV is a shell of what it once was and never will be the same either.

Coaches are always happy with the job they've got.....until a better one comes along. Officially being the coach at a school for less than a week and then bolting is plain embarrassing. Hopefully he stays.

Kruger had them back to a good and competitive program. Can they get back to that 87-91 type run? Would be hard for most any team to have that type of run.
But it is a program that should be competitive and make some noise in the tourney consistently. They have an awesome practice facility and nice arena. They get top recruiting classes (helps with Findley Prep and Gorman feeding them talent most years). Just need to find that right coach.
The whole process UNLV took with this coaching search was a joke. They had a huge jump start and still took forever, took 11 days to finalize a contract and then 4 regents still voted no on it. Doesn't help they are cheap either.

will the Rebs ever be relevant again?

Especially since it's in Lubbock, TX. AKA "The Anus of Texas".
Real pictures of dust storms in Lubbock...

Classy move. Not sure how you can justify bolting like that
