Former NFL guard Conrad Dobler says he can't even remember his children's names

Conrad Dobler, who once was labeled "pro football's dirtiest player" by Sports Illustrated, said he is suffering memory loss that likely stems in part from head trauma suffered during his 10-year pro career.
“I have six kids, I don’t even know their names,’’ Dobler told USA TODAY Sports. “It kind of pisses me off because I prided myself on having such a wonderful memory.’’
For example, Dobler said, as a kid he helped his father with a food distributorship.
“My dad would make up the order and he’d give me a list of the things we needed — 20 cases of half gallons of milk, 30 cases of quarts, yep-dep-dep down the list,’’ Dobler said. “I could go out there and fill the order without a mistakes. Now, I probably couldn’t find the truck.’’
Dobler said he’s undergone neurological testing to determine if he’s suffering from Alzheimer’s or any other brain disease, but the tests were inconclusive.

Sad. I just don't see how a parent allows their child to play football these days.

Dobler and Deirdorf helped make that Cardinal line the best in football for a few years.

... Is a mainstream football audience supposed to know who a 3x Pro Bowler was from the '70s and '80s?

Are you being sarcastic?
It's like you're not supposed to know anything about a sport before the moment you began paying attention to it.

He's bullshitting and has been litigating the NFL off and on for probably 20 years
which is not to say the NFL isn't full of shite, either

He was a slightly above average offensive lineman in the '70's. Let's not act like he should be a household name for anyone under the age of 50 or 60.

I have no doubt he played some games when he shouldn't have, but back then, team physicians were very much in the 'it's just a bruise' mode.

How did you even attain this knowledge?

I remember reading articles about this dude suing the NFL 15-20 years ago. He isn't a drooling vegetable, even if the average NFL med staff in the 70's were total scumbags, which they probably were.

Dick Butkus sued the Bears, Bill Walton sued the Blazers...it happened. You didn't hear about any class-action stuff back then, though.

Yes...if have watched a quarter of NFL films....and are a supposed fan of the sport.

So the medical tests do not indicate any underlying neurological conditions AND he's able to freely recall detailed episodic memories from his childhood. Yet, he doesn't know his children's names? Not just having trouble remembering their names, or certain indivduals names, BUT the absolute worst case scenario?
I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. That being said, between the medical testing, the detailed memories he can recall to support his argument, and the extremity of the memories he can't recall to also support his argument, I'm quite skeptical of his claims.

quote:O come on. He was a guard (maybe the least recognizable position) who played less than a decade and retired 35 years ago. Unless one was alive during his playing days, then I bet only a small percentage of football fans born in the 80's onward know who he is.
