A 4 team play-off will bring some objectivity to the subjective ranking system that picks the top 2 teams. I definitely like this better than the endless debates that are mostly meaningless.
If you can't make it as a top 4 team, just shut the f up! Plus, it would provide a legitimate opportunity to teams like Oklahoma State that don't have the media appeal that the Alabamas or SCs have.

This.

"Conference Champs Only" assumes that all conferences are equal. They are obviously not.

Keep it simple. BCS 1 through 4. The end. I've never heard someone make an argument for BCS #5 to be in the NC game.

How do you have a 2 team playoff? Isn't that called a championship game?

That's because that argument hasn't mattered. Now the battle for #4 and #5 will be all the rage.

That being said, I'm totally for a 4-team play off, I hope it expands to 8 for that matter.

I don't understand why people believe EVERY ORGANIZED SPORT IN THE WORLD is doing it wrong and college football is the exception, including division 1AA, 2, and 3 college football. Regular seasons are for earning a spot in the play offs and getting a good seeding, in all sports. Play offs are for the teams that step up and win championships.

My pipe dream: (even though I know it wont happen)
8 team play offs with a poll (not a committee) deciding who the top 8 are. first two rounds are home games for higher seeds and then a neutral site "superbowl" so to speak to crown the champ. And to counter the "ruins the regular season" BS argument have SOS count for much more then it does now. That'll encourage teams to limit how often they schedule the cupcakes and take on some actual challenges.

I say 4 is good enough. Usually the teams ranked there have 0-1 loss so it would be fair. Its better than no playoff system and it would stop alot of the whining and let teams like boise have their shot

Probably, but it will be a meaningless argument hopefully. As someone said earlier, if you can't crack the top 4, then they need to STFU.

I can dig it. But a plus one is an excellent and painless first step. Maybe we get 8 eventually.

Adamantly opposed. The proposed neutral site playoff systems completely disregard the plight of the traveling fan. Attending a single national championship game is a time consuming, expensive endeavor, especially if the game takes place some distance from the majority of a school's fanbase. Attending two playoff games on back to back weekends in different cities separated by hundreds of miles will simply be impossible for the majority of college football devotees. The championship game will be a hollow media event similar to the Super Bowl, populated predominantly by wealthy sports tourists with no emotional tie to either contender. It will suck.

Very much in favor of a Top 4 Team BCS Playoff. For those of you old enough New Years Day Game will mean something again. Also best 4 not conference champions only. Best ACC is not as good as SEC 2nd in East or West any given year. Dump Harris and Coaches Poll too but that would be a pipe dream...

I don't think anything is wrong with the existing BCS.

It will be like the old NCAA basketball tournament.

the non-champs went to the NIT. only champs of conferences and two Catholic INDs were in the NCAA tournament, for the longest time.

What I want to know is what happens to Notre Dame if only conf. champs get to be in the champ game?
Will they join the Big East for football (in addition to many other sports, all except hockey),
or Big Ten for football only?

I'm for the 6 team mostly when 1 and 2 get a bye.

This is huge, and only one of the issues. A playoff would be terrible.

Fans seem to travel just fine for other sports. IDK why people assume that college football fans wouldn't travel as much as fans of NFL teams or NBA teams. I think they'd travel MUCH better, actually.

How awesome/stupid would it have been in 2001 to have LSU in the BCS playoff while Tenn and Florida sit at home? Or last year to have Bama sit at home while Oregon or Clemson in the playoff?

So the only way I'm in favor of conf champs getting an automatic playoff spot is to have at large spots for the great teams who happen to be in strong conferences. Which I guess gives us an 8 team playoff. Which is kind of a lot, although I'd be in favor of rewarding the top 2 with a bye.

I would prefer a six team configuration. Give automatic bids to the SEC, Big XII, Pac-12, and Big Ten champs, and two wild cards. The #1 and #2 teams would get first round byes.

Having said that, I am so elated that we are moving from the BCS, that I will happily take the four team playoff! I like the idea of on-campus games, but understand why it can't happen. However, I think you can merge that idea with the "neutral site" idea by playing in bigger stadiums closer to the higher ranked team. For instance, we would "host" a game in New Orleans. USC would "host" a game in the Rose Bowl. Oregon would "host" a game in Seattle. So on and so forth.

I think the four-teams is a good compromise between those that want a full blown playoff and those that think the regular season is sacred.
