Joe Gibbs doesn't even get an honorable mention? He won 3 SBs with 3 different QBs. I don't know if any other coach has even done it with two.

Also. If they are throwing in college, wouldn't Saban or the Bear get a mention?

In 10-15 years when he finally calls it quits, Saban will be on this list.

ETA: And as much as I fricking hate Alabama, not having Bear Bryant as even an honorable mention is dumb.

Gibbs was probably in the next tier

and while Bear and Saban are great winners, neither were innovators in the class of the top 5 and maybe not the 3 honorable mentions either.

Maybe not, but Bryant took other coaches' ideas and perfected them. Was also great at adapting to emerging trends.

Sure and if I was making a list of 10 or 15 those guys would definitely make it, but in my view the legacy you leave behind in terms of how you impacted the game as a whole is as much if not more significant than just the wins and losses, especially when you're splitting hairs between the best of the best of the best.

Then why don't you call it "Football's best ever innovators"?

"Best Ever Coaches" directly implies wins and losses.

Not arguing your list ,but Bill Walsh did not invent the West Coast Offense. Paul Brown did.

Bill Belichick also agrees:

" The West Coast Offense should be the 'Ohio River Offense' because it(West Coast) is Paul Browns Offense that Walsh took out there".

Walsh learned it while coaching under Paul Brown & tweaked it some at Browns urging, but.....

Throw in the rule changes to open up passing in the late 70's/ early 80's & the offense took off.

Because wins and losses matter too. That's why Chip Kelly isn't anywhere near this list

No it doesn't. If wins and losses were all I cared about I would have titled the thread "Footballs most successful coaches" or something like that and ranked it Bear then Lombardi then Saban

Well #1 Brown and Walsh developed it together & Brown gave Walsh great deference, much more than any other assistant

#2 Walsh didn't just take the playbook with him to San Francisco, plug it in, and just start reeling off Super Bowls. He heavily modified the system he and Brown had developed & that is what was used in SF. Walsh was also an outstanding game manger and talent evaluator.

#3 Paul Brown is #1 on the list

How does Vince Lombardi not make the top 5?

Only coach to win three consecutive NFL championships
9-1 Playoff Record (Highest Playoff winning percentage of all-time)

And here's another mindboggling statistic. Every NFL coach who won at least four championships coached at least 22 years except for Guy Chamberlain who won his four championships in the 1920s when the NFL was in its infancy. Lombardi won five championships in 10 years. That's absolutely incredible. I don't think we'll ever see another coach who accomplishes so much in such a brief amount of time.
