re: Evan Gattis to the Astros

Losing Folty is not great but he still has a lot of development to go through. I think he could end up being a very solid reliever/closer, and if he can harness his arm effectively in the rotation it's obviously a game changer. From what I've read people are still pretty skeptical about that but we will see.
I know our blogs and writers have fapped over Ruiz but he is still likely to be blocked by Moran. If we are going to give up valued guys in the system I would rather do it from a spot of relative depth, which is where Ruiz was.
Thurman is a back rotation starter at best
You have to give something up to get something and it's a nice haul for the Braves but I think Gattis fits into the lineup and the ballpark very nicely

Give me a proven young big league player with power over 3 guys who just have "upside." Power is a premium right now and Gattis has that in bunches, if he just learns a bit of plate discipline, and less Mark Reynolds.

Evan drelich saying other players are involved. Which makes sense. Astros should get more.

It isn't because the top 2 prospects (correa and appel)
I catapulted up when they drafted Correa & Appel, & George Springer was showing out.
I mean your top 5 hitting prospects by MLB.com at the end of last year
Correa
Domingo Santana- we know how that worked out
Colin Moran- Dave Magadan type
Ruiz- traded
Deshields- Rule 5
So if there is depth, and those are your top guys, what is behind it?

You are also leaving out the fact the Astros have 2 of the top 5 picks in this years draft.

So let me.get this straight...writing Santana off after a few MLB at bats and being 23 years old, huh? If you're not writing him off, choose your words better.
Yet, Deshields is your go to man in the Astros system.

I'm glad we are chalking Santana up as a loss because of 18 plate appearances.
no calling him a loss at all. But obviously they thought he was the next guy up. If he was the next guy, what about the others?
in 17ABs he ended up making contact 3 times. That has to be concerning
Prom, Deshields isn't "my boy", shite, he isn't even that good, but he's not really a guy the Astros can afford to lose. Just look at KC. Speed kills regardless if you're an all star caliber player or not

Gattis was in Houston to take a physical on Wednesday and his health is no small concern, according to multiple people close to the situation. Gattis has had his right knee operated on twice, including last offseason, and there are concerns about his back as well.

If there is anyone that will X out a player over a physical, it's the astros
Posted on 1/14/15 at 7:22 pm to Prominentwon
Well that is not encouraging

Meh.... 3 unknowns for 1 proven is enough

Check out Lancaster... Ruiz wasn't even the best hitter on his team last year -- he gets the most buzz because he was a highly regarded 3B out of high school.
Lancaster is loaded with bats. In general, the Astros are below average in age at every single level. Once the talent starts maturing, you'll start hearing more names.
Check out Quad Cities and Corpus.
You keep wanting to convince that losing Deshields was such a tremendous loss. If that is so, then you must also recognize all of the other players in the organization that have performed equally as well, or better. If you aren't willing to do that, than you truly are a simplistic troll with nothing of value to say.
And FYI, Deshields was no where near the Top 5 hitting prospect for the Astros at the end of the year. MLB had him ranked that highly because of his MLB pedigree and his number of stolen bases. He could have easily been protected for Rule 5. The Astros rate Andrew Alpin, Joe Slafani, and Matt Duffy all higher than Deshields. They've all had very similiar minor league careers so far... with the exception that Deshields reportedly acts like a spoiled child to his coaching staff. I will give him props for taking a fastball off the cheek and not calling it a season.
Interesting
As for Santana -- he's played all of 6 games. He's 21 years old and has hit right at .300 his minor league career (including his first year of A ball when he was 17 years old and hit just over .200). Darryl Strawberry? Not quite. But I wouldn't bet a pack of gum that the kid won't turn it around. I've seen him play in person and he is MLB caliber... he just has to get his head straight.

Biggest thing is Gattis is under team control for 4 more seasons. He's not even arb eligible till 2016.
Huge factor being overlooked in the trade. I think it's get for both teams.
I'm a little weary of ATL making this trade since he's so cheap though.

Lunhow is finally making moves to make the ML team better. whether they are the right moves or not remains to be seen and the prospects are like lottery tickets. none of those three are can't miss guys, but Ruiz has a fairly high ceiling…if Gattis can continue to hit for power and reduce Ks a bit, it may work out IF the other necessary pieces come along (adding to starting rotation, improved bullpen, etc..)

Trying to call anything a trade rape right now is incredibly incredibly stupid. Nobody has a clue if any of those three will work out or not. Trades like this cannot be evaluated until several years down the road.
I don't understand the point you are trying to push across. Astros fans seem happy with the move, as do Braves fans.
Why can't you just let it be? It's a stupid argument.

Bottom line is that Gattis is proven and the prospects aren't.
Who knows the prospects may turn out to be really good players one day. No one knows for sure right now.
I think it was a good deal for both teams involved.

Because, you don't trade that many good prospects for a player like Gattis
It was incredibly stupid. It's okay for you to admit it. Unless this is the first prospect for ML player trade you've ever seen

The Astros have four years with Gattis. He is going to get a boost in homeruns with the short porch in left.
I love the move. I'm ready for the Astros to win some games. A power bat in the middle of the lineup will be great to have, especially if Carter can put up the numbers he did the second half of last season.
You have no idea what you are talking about right now, quit embarassing yourself.
