Mack's legacy will always be in transforming Texas football into something bigger and at least relevant again. Apathy was starting to set in back in the 90's. "Too much else to do in Austin" was the excuse for small crowds and mediocre teams. Mack single handedly changed that attitude.

He was very close to winning another natty and playing for a couple more. But ifs and buts...

He played in two National Championship games. Other than 2008, I have no idea where he came close again

2001. Texas lost a chance to play Miami for the NC in the Rose Bowl by losing to Colorado, 39-37, in the conference championship game.

Tenn. beat the presumptive Miami opponent for the NC (Florida) just moments before the Texas kickoff in a game pushed to Dec. by 9-11.

LSU beat Tenn the next weekend in SEC champ game, fueling further the "what if."
