I'll be 35 years old tmrw. For some reason, I grew up hating Eric Dickerson. Maybe it was some of my first major football memories as a young Dallas fan in the early 80's, watching him doing it to us, + the whole Tony Dorsett is just way better thing drilled into my head Lolz. To be honest though, he really was just a very graceful back that made the game look easy, and when he spoke up for what he deserved at the time, just became vilified in 2 cities.

Now looking back on 2012 and remembering how bad I wanted AP to get that single season rushing record and thinking "win one for the good guys." Seems very laughable.

Was Eric Dickerson the most talented yet most unfairly demonized elite RB ever?

Thoughts?

I always just let my reaction be, "what an arrogant dickhead!"... Every time I ever heard him speak on the game over the past few decades. But he actually seems to be loved by his teammates and coaches. And the Rams were just a frick all, stupid organization in LA during that time with tales of having several players checks bounce when they tried to cash them. Just seems like he could have just as easily been Walter Payton if he was a little older and drafted by a better organization just a few years earlier. Maybe the Steelers or something.

I thought that little piece about how he almost got into with David Stanley when SMU was recruiting Stanley was kind of funny.

maybe they should have listened to Dickerson. He told the SMU people to avoid that guy.

they were going to get caught regardless but I just thought that was interesting that there was some hostility between Dickerson and Stanley right away.

He wanted to be paid like the superstar he was and the amount they offered was low.

He is the best RB other than Jim Brown to play in NFL. He had size, speed, could catch the ball when asked.

And could throw it. He literally was the best QB on the Rams one year.

The year the made the NFC Champ game with Brock at QB tells you how great he was. Then he goes to Indy and they won the division.

I got ED to sign a program for me at the Saints vs Rams game in the dome in 2002 (I think that was the year).

We were sitting right behind the Saints bench for the MNF game and ED was their sideline reporter.

I walked up to him, leaned over the rail, and asked him to sign my program. He was stunned, which surprised me.

He asked me twice: "you sure you want my autograph"?.

I remember like it was yesterday, answering him the second time he asked: "yes, I want the signature of one of the best RBs to play the game". He must have thanked me a dozen times...

THEN he offered to take my program on the sidelines to some Saints players and have them sign it too. I declined. I put that program in shrink wrap and have it in my LSU room with some other collectibles.

I'm still surprised, to this day, how nice and HUMBLE he came off. Anecdotal, I know...

I grew up a cowboys fan and I never hated Dickerson. I didn't like the rams though. Dickerson was an elite talent. He still rocked the jerry curl and rec specs later than most too.

I was in this same boat. At the time I thought Dickerson was a huge a-hole (maybe because I was genuinely rooting for AP at that time) for the way he was openly rooting for AP to fail. Now I find it refreshing that he didn't give the PC answers and said exactly how he felt.

Yeah, while watching this I was also thinking how Indy is one of the luckiest cities ever. They've always been blessed with a top notch talent within every 5 years or so since the Colts moved from Bmore.

The best Dickerson story is the Gold Firebird. Bought for and delivered by aTm and that man goes to SMU. Then the Aggies aren't even man enough to ask for it back.

First time I saw him play vs Arkansas I thought this guy is good.

I was lucky as a kid growing up in Fayettenam got to see Campbell (first ever college game I went to), Eric, Walter Abercrombie, Gary Anderson, Napoleon McCallum, and many others. Then when in college our bye week was usually the aTm game so got to see most of their great backs of the 90's live.
