Does Marcus Mariota really have more upside than Zach Mettenberger?

Zach was decent in his limited starts last year, wasn't he? I guess he didn't help his case with his homeless look. It could have been perceived as him not taking his QB role seriously. And that douche bag JJ Watt didn't help matters.

I don't think his haircut has much to do with it...one is mobile and the other is frozen in place...

There's 0% chance this played any role in the decision to draft Mariota

i thought Mett was alright for a rookie.

what exactly did he have to work with though?

Mariota ought to have a boat load of fun figuring out what the Titans want to do to during training camp this year.

they need help on the line of scrimmages too. Hallmark of a bad team, bad O-line/D-line.

Titans would have been better served to take Cooper and actually give Mett a weapon. Instead they took the next guy that will be dragging his leg around in a few years.

I'm obviously a huge Mett fan, but the fact is he didn't lead his team to any wins. Mariota is mobile and maybe that will help the Titans. Zach is not mobile at all. I wish Zach all the best, but I think Mariota will help the Titans win games.

So how do you have a competition between the two? They're completely different. Mariota will struggle in a pro style offense. Mett obviously can't run a spread option team.

Titans are handing the starting job to Mariota according to Whisenhunt, so are they completely changing their offense? Yet they see Mett as a backup who will be forced to play at some point during the season because Mariota will get hurt. So do they completely change their offense again when that happens?

Seems like a giant mess that was not needed.

Yes. He has way more upside. That's why one went 2nd overall and the other 6th round.

you should be a NFL GM, shite we should all take a stab at it.

seems pretty easy.

Yeah. A QB with 8 TD's and 11 TO's. Not to mention some injury problems that consist of an ACL tear in college and a shoulder injury in the pros.

There is a reason people draft people.

people want to compare Mariota with Kap but at least Kap walked into a good situation.

maybe the Titans can shore up some more needs in this draft but they are pretty much a faceless franchise right now.

Sorry man, I didn't realize if I disagree with people then I have to be a GM to answer. I will admit that I am not a GM, but a GM definitely chose to pick Mariota as the second pick in the NFL draft.

I guess he is planning to put him as a backup and learn under Mettenberger.

To be fair to him, they only had two, which I would say means you got more problems than just QB, and that those problems are severe.

I'm not sure if you mixed up what I responded to or what...

That was what I responded to.

But yeah I watch a lot of both. More college than NFL I admit, but still a lot of it.

Mettenberger did not play bad last year as a rookie, but he definitely doesn't have more upside than Mariota. I think this even if Mettenberger was healthy, and he is not. Missed last three games of the season with a shoulder injury to his throwing arm. The right people know more information than we do.

This is why the Titans would pick Mariota over Mett instead of taking the many deals that were offered for that second pick.

Neither one has much upside IMO, but Mariota's floor is lower. You already know what you're going to get from Mett which isn't awful but isn't great either. Mariota might be good but at the same time he could be really really bad.

probably.

its a specialty.

I guess it says something if the Titans turned down some offers for the #2 pick. Surely they did, right?

they are just a faceless franchise that doesn't have to a make a forced pick at this point. Or do they?

QB is a pretty over drafted position in the pros lately. People might want to blame spread offenses or no huddle attack offenses... sounds good.

but in the end these NFL guys have to take a QB if they don't have a good one. I just feel like Mett hasn't got a good shake. Blame injuries... legit. But why not try a bigger sample size?

I don't know.

Yeah we don't know what Mariota is going to do, but he was better than Mett in college without any serious injuries/off the field issues besides the speeding ticket.

I am not sure, but we might kind of agree. I agree that the Titans are a dumpster fire, but as a qb Mariota is a start to fix it. Mett might be able to play at a good level on another team if he stays healthy (and I hope he does).

I just think Mariota would be a better fit for a developing team. Mett is better to sit behind a good qb for a couple of years before he can take over a program that is already developed.

I'm warming up to Mett and thought he was pretty good for a rookie who was thrown into a shite situation. He's a bit annoying as he has a golden arm, but looks about as athletic as an 80 year old woman and has the demeanor of a kid who lost his puppy. I think he could be alright in the league.

But, the thought of an organization not having any other option at QB going into a season other than him is just scary. Then drafting another QB isn't weird at all, it was a must.
