One thing that struck me is, how could his translator gamble millions of dollars? There's no way he has that kind of money and no bookie would have taken those bets.

He gambled and I don’t care. MLB will sweep this under the rug bc the commissioner is a royal POS.

Would you give him full access to your bank account?

He’s not his agent, he’s an interpreter. If he needs money it’s simple, Shohei sends a wire. Who in their right mind gives an interpreter access to an account able to transfer millions?

Meanwhile you've got Ohtani who doesn't even respect America enough to learn a few cursory phrases of English in the 6 years he's lived here
Im pretty sure he does know at least some english. just doesnt feel comfortable enough with it in a formal setting like a conference. which i get completely.

That the guy who has finished no worse than 2nd in MVP voting (and top 5 in Cy Young the one year in the past 3 he finished 2nd for the MVP) the past three years isn't throwing games?

Yeah, I'm sure.

There are 162 games in a season. Given how impactful he is individually and the fact that he's a two-way player, it would be even easier for someone like him to pull it off and it have zero effect on whether or not he finishes high in voting.

It's not a rule.

It is a LAW.

There is a difference.

To the OP, Ohtani was gambling his arse off. No doubt at all.

Last week he was quoted saying that he paid off the translator's debt in 500k increments; this week, he says he never paid any debts.

Actually, you can wire transfer much larger sums than $500K with online banking. Especially if his account was set up as a business account and not a personal account. Many professional athletes operate as a business entity - many years ago, I managed the payroll system for the Indiana Pacers -- all of those athletes operated as a business entity.

All that said, Ohtani 100% gambles. Someone that gambles that much, is not going to stop simply because he got caught this time. He will keep doing it.

I wonder how long the interpreter will stay silent when he starts looking at prison time for stealing millions from the best baseball player on the planet?

I can tell you that Asian dudes have 3 vices.

1. Drinking
2. Smoking
3. Gambling

Shohei ain't immune to it. I don't believe anything he says

If the DOJ gets involved, the it's going to be tough for the MLB to sweep it under the rug. This is bigger than violating some MLB rules. There are some pretty substantial federal criminal offenses in question right now. Whether it's his interpreter, Ohtani himself, or both is the question no one knows the answer to

I have heard that guys like Ronald Acuna use an interpreter so they don't mix up stuff and hurt their brand....I can 100% see that with as much money in endorsements these guys get

By the end of his career, I'm pretty sure Ichiro was very fluent in English, but just didn't want to talk to people

I don't blame him one bit.
