There's a player opt out after 3 seasons so if he's quality, somebody else will be on the hook for his late years.

Just saw that the Cardinals were runner ups with a 7year offer just short of 200 million and Price woke up today expecting to be a Cardinal. Sox then came in with huge offer.

That's crazy. Kind of glad it didn't happen tbh.

Also just saw Greinke to decide between Giants and Dodgers as early as tonight.

I have no clue if will Price opt out or not, no one does, but he and has agent wouldn't have negotiated it into the contract if they didn't think it was a decent possibility.

In 3 years when contracts are even more inflated? I can see a situation where he would.

I dont think it's a decent possibility at all

they also strategically negotiated that he makes the most per year in the last 4 years of the deal.

4yrs 127 mil to end the contract. $31, 32, 32, 32 mil.

if someone is going to give a 33yr old with a lot of miles a 6 or 7 year deal at that point, its going to have to be a good bit more than that 127 mil. Even with that you're looking at 20-25mil per year going into his 40s. Cant see it

if he pitches good enough for him to opt out, you're not going to want him to leave. He's going to be that good

Greinke is going to land a contract north of $150 at nearly the same age. Price easily could too (even if the AAV is slightly lower) especially with all the inflation in baseball.

Either way. I agree that the opt out isn't good for the team. The opt out provides no value for the team, only the player.

It provided value if the only option was to pay him more in lieu of it.

true, I imagine Price could have got an inch more if he would have bypassed the player option.

I agree he won't opt out as a 33 year old (soon to be 34) making 30m a year. Doesn't matter how salaries rise unless he turns into Kershaw.

I wish they had signed him. That would have set the Cards back soon.

Sox fan here and I do not like this. Too long of a contract and he is not great in the post season. Detroit and Toronto both let him go after giving up assets for him. Detroit supposedly got better assets back than they gave up but still, no one seemed to eager to keep him at this price tag. These long deals rarely work out. Look at CC Sabathia, Verlander, Arod, etc.....I guess baseball teams are just loaded like that.

Apparently he really wanted to go to the national league. Boston Globe said cubs were first choice, cards second but money won out. Guess Boston wasn't blowing smoke when they said they'd go 30 to 40 million more than any offer.
