But here's the rub. He is INTENSE. Sure, that's a good thing if there's a knob that can be dialed down from 100. But Bregs doesn't have that knob. I think he hits for shite in the postseason because he gets way too amped up. He got his first hit in like 3 weeks last night to break the game open, and even then you'd think it would kill him to crack a big smile. I think Bregs may be his own worst enemy, and I'm now a bit afraid of him with a top 5 pick.

Nailed it. shite like shaving his head because he's in a slump. It all comes from a good place because he does care and he works his arse off. But he lacks that clutch gene because he gets in his own head too much.

I really really hope we take Rodgers if Swanson is gone, but ultimately, Bregman is gonna have a cheaper price tag and that's why Luhnow will grab him

if he is grabbing inferior talent because it has a cheaper price tag he needs to be fired.

You mean so they can have a larger bonus pool for the later picks?

The second pick isn't protected is it? That will play a part if not.

ETA: Talking about 1.2 not Houston's second pick.

Yeah, I'd rather roll the dice on Fulmer, Jay or Tate as an underslot with TOR potential and beast closer floor if Swanson is not there. Then grab Tucker at 1.5 while telling Cameron that he will get $3 million if he tells other teams he ain't signing for less. Then take Dax at 37. #winning

1.2 is protected...can become 1.3 next year. Current rules give you two years protection on a pick.

I'm not crazy about it at times either but that's what he does. It's how we got Correa and McCullers. No way we can get him if Correa doesn't go under slot. That strategy could've paid off big last year if Aiken signs.

I'd much rather take the best player regardless of price tag at this point in the process. The minors are pretty well stocked. But if we net an extra big leaguer or two due to this strategy, what's there to complain about?

I also don't want Bregman. I'm a huge LSU fan but give me someone with higher upside in the top 5.

Retrospect is 20/20, Correa was not considered the talent that Buxton and Appel were at the time. There were definitely people that questioned the pick and the strategy

I'm not saying this as argument for taking Bregman, just defending the strategy of taking someone who can sign under slot

Exactly. Bregman is a leader and he has a passion for the game that is not matched by man players. I think he could be a key leader in the Astros club house and a high motor guy in the top half of the lineup.

I'm a big supporter of Bregman at 1.2, especially if it allows us to play with slot money later in the draft,

Yeah he was. But even then, it was like he was still in Mr. Baseball mode. I think if he'd just let his emotions completely go and act like a 21-year old having the time of his life just a little bit, he'd be an even better ballplayer. Anyone who watches him regularly would likely come to the same conclusion.

Yeah I'm pretty neutral on him. I think I would prefer a Rodgers/Benintendi combo at this point but I wouldn't be upset if we got Bregman and Tucker. To me everyone after Swanson is bunched pretty close together with their pluses and minuses
