What was Biggios WAR at catcher?
But to be fair, historically, outside of 10-15 guys MAYBE, catchers aren't the most offensive, statistical guys with ANY team. Not just Houston

Yeah, a defense first catcher was always more important for a team in the Astrodome. By the time we moved to MMP, Brad Ausmus was entrenched as defensive God catcher until 2008.

Ausmus was so big for that pitching staff. He was a zero at the plate but was great defensively and handling pitchers. Pettitte/Clemens/Oswalt loved him.
You had to be great to keep the immortal Gregg Zaun on the bench

crazy to think bryce harper was a catcher in high school he would've basically shattered every record imaginable

Most of the great hitting catchers are moved to another spot to keep them healthy. That will never change. Top two college catchers taken in the draft this month were immediately moved to another position.

Even the really good guys who "stay" at catcher are splitting time at 1B or DH now. Lucroy and Posey spend time at 1B, Mauer split time there before moving permanently.

You really have to do it. On that note, I'd love to see Gattis be able to play a little 1B next year so we can have him and another RHB catcher (I think Castro leaves) play while Reed is shielded a bit vs. lefties.

This is going to be a really interesting offseason for us with all the expiring deals and youngsters rising up. It's a long ways off but this is where the rubber meets the road for Ludlow

Funny thing is, I think you can QO Castro, Val, Fister and even Gomez without risk of them taking it if the season ended today. But it does not end today...

I dunno about Gomez. Fister and Val I agree. Who knows on Castro honestly since the catcher market is so shitty. Gomez is a prime candidate to take the QO because his value is rock bottom and there's a lot of upside potential for him if he bounces back next year

And it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to get this post-Corpus Gomez for one more year while Fisher and Teoscar H. continue to develop plus get their first tastes of MLB. He is still dumb and annoying, but can we get the rest of the lineup right so you can bat him 9th next year? That would be just fine.

Individually, I can see those guys getting offers. But when you look at the four of them collectively, you better be sure no more than 2 would accept.
Posted on 6/28/16 at 5:41 pm to Jwho77
18 mil is still a lot to pay for that type of guy. I would rather look at Desmond or Reddick for a 4 year type deal and someone you can slot more in the middle of order personally. A lot more money involved too obviously but I think we need to have an eye toward contending instead of being flexible.

Yeah that would be an astronomical payroll increase for one year as well

All day, but we know many other teams will want them, too. May be hard to get either if we tried.
It's a weak market so current Gomez and Fister would fetch more than the QO or close to it per season for multiple years. I hope that happens. It would be the best case scenario for them to earn it because we'll keep winning now and get draft picks later.
Posted on 6/28/16 at 5:47 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
Read an article saying the A's want to sign Reddick for 3/$36MM, and he wants 4/$60MM. I think I would do that assuming he comes back from injury and produced like he's expected to.
Posted on 6/28/16 at 5:47 pm to Jwho77
If the season ended today I think the absolute max Gomez would be looking at is 3 years 35-40 mil.
I don't think there's any question Fister is a great candidate for the QO right now and I'm sure we give him one. I'd be shocked if he took it unless he just likes it in Houston.

Yeah, I am pretty confident Fister and Gomez are going to go for longer term security/money with their backgrounds and ages. The only guy we KNOW would take another QO is Rasmus.
Posted on 6/28/16 at 5:49 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
Based on performance this year and team needs for next season, I'd probably order it
Fister
Castro
Buena
Gomez
In the order I would be most willing to QO
But that doesn't factor in who's more likely to accept

I just don't think Gomez is going to have a choice unless he sets the world on fire. His earning potential with the one year QO plus a decent bounce back year is much higher than taking 2/24 or something like that. I think it would be a big mistake offering it to him
