Nine years and then NFL pension for life. Not a bad deal considering the charges levied against him.

Sharper is most certainly not perfectly funtioning.
You only do these types of things if you have no capacity to feel remorse or empathy. That is not perfectly functioning. Some sociopaths are con artists. Others torture animals and then later people. Others drug then rape women. Whatever tickles their fancy. And they don't care. There is no right or wrong in his world. He even admitted doing what he was accused of, probably because he doesn't feel it's wrong in his mind. It's classic antisocial personality disorder.
Just because there is a good explanation for his behavior doesn't mean we're excusing it. But the dude has psychological problems that go beyond being a jerk.

I'm no legal expert, but I'm very surprised. I thought the plea deal would be 15-20 years. The fact that it will only be nine made trial a risk not worth taking.

to be fair, the victims do not have to see their lives go viral for months in end, they get a measure of justice and can try to move on

I also heard that in at least two of the cases, the evidence was sketchy at best and prosecutors would have had a hard time making it stick, so in those cases they probably see it as a win.
