You do realize its significantly easier to complete passes in the NFL these days compared to the 1980's don't you? You do realize that the NFL has made an effort to become a passing game rather than a running game don't you?

His best season in 1984 was 5084 yards on 564 attempts, completion rate on 64.2 %, yards per completion was 14.0
Transfer that to 2014 when 11 teams had over 600 attempts passing, 2 teams over 650. It could be realistic that Marino would have 650 attempts in a modern offense. Assuming the same completion rate, and yards per completion, he would have had 5893 yards in his best season.
It would have been very hard to hit 6000, but he could have had the most yards in a season. The record owned by Manning is 393 more yards than Marino's 1984 season but Manning had 90 more attempts.

Marino played his entire career after the bump and run rule, we aren't talking about Johnny Unitas here

Kind of a humblebrag but whatever. I went to HS with one of Marino's daughters, that chick used to bring so much blow to all the parties. She got kicked out of the school for lighting up in the bathroom my junior year

Montana had a career 63.2% completion, Young had a career 64.3%. Considered two of the best QBs of the 80s/90s and they still get sub 65 completion%. That is ludicrous to compare completion % eras.
In 1984, the average top 10 QBs compiled a 62.52 completion %.
In 1985, the average top 10 QBs compiled a 58.72 completion %.
In 2013, the average top 10 QBs compiled a 66.25 completion %.
In 2014, the average top 10 QBs compiled a 66.83 completion %.

When san Fran started running the west coast offense a lot more receptions were made by runnbacks out of the backfield which helped completion %, fast forward to today with the hybrid backs most offense start there.
Back in the day most everything was down field, I would love to watch Marino play in today's NFL, with Marino you had to cover the whole field, and the ball would come out before the defense could turn their hips. Aaron Rodgers is the closest ive seen throw the ball the way Marino slang it

He threw a lot of passes away because of pressure. THe game today is so different. The 46 fricking defense worked back then.
also, I'd say 90% of the time he was working with only 2 WRS and not these 4-5 WR packages they do these days.

There have been other limitations place on the cb since then as well. There have also been changes allowing for the ol to more easily block for the qb.

Romo averaged 8.5 YPA last year, best in the league. At that rate, a QB would have to nearly break the record for attempts in a season to hit 6k. Would not happen with that volume.

Marino was a beast. Its too bad we were robbed of seeing the 1985 Dolphins vs. Da bears in the SB. A rematch from the regular season in which the Dolphins gave the Bears their only loss that season....
