Diminish the power of some of the voters is a start.....

No reason
Tim Raines
Alan Trammell
Mike Mussina
Schilling
Bonds
Clemens
Piazza
Sosa
Palmerio
McGwire (who I could probably argue against)
Biggio
Bagwell
Edgar Martinez
Jeff Kent

This was not a publicity stunt, but he sure is getting a lot of publicity out of this. And I'm sure he knew that out front.

I don't trust people who go on television and say "I didn't do it for the publicity." That's the sanctimonious part of the whole thing. At least the sell-outs are honest about their intentions.

With all that being said, I don't have a problem with what he did, AT ALL.

Considering he didn't "sell" his vote as the only thing he has received is backlash

But doesn't every voter have just one vote?

I agree they do some stupid things but idk how to make it any better than what it is

Yes.

You have a ballot with several names on it and you can select up to 10.

One guy only sent in a vote for Jack Morris.

Others voted for guys who shouldn't even be on the ballot: Armando Benitez, JT Snow, Jacque Jones, Richie Sexson, etc..

I'm sure some of the guys above did it to prevent a guy like Maddux from being a 1st ballot HOFer.

I have already read from one voter who said he voted for 10 and deliberately kept Bagwell off his ballot. Not because he wasn't one of his top 10, but because he knew he would still get enough votes to be on the ballot next year and he would vote for him then.

That's frickED UP.

Yeah Kurkjian said that same thing. He left Schilling off his ballot in favor of Jack Morris, so Morris could get another shot next year.

He even admitted he though Schilling was a better player than Morris.

What's the threshold for votes to remain on the ballot?

From wiki:

quote:

A player who is named on fewer than 5% of ballots is dropped from future elections.

Well, now I'm looking and it looks like I misheard Kurkjian because Morris's candidacy has expired because it was his 15th year on the ballot.

I think it is, if you think he belongs in. If you put Fred McGriff, for example, on your ballot instead, and your rationale is "I think Bagwell is better and I don't think McGriff will get in, but it would be cool if he got to be on the ballot one more year," then that's some messed-up thinking.

And you're creating the logjam that causes the rationale that allows Jeff Bagwell to wait.

Yeah, I think he said he was going with Morris because it was his last year of eligibility.

He did say that.

After looking closer at the whole process, I suspect that it goes on a lot. People get voted for just because people think they deserve to stay on the ballot OVER people that they know are going to get a shitload of votes because they can vote for those guys at any point that they feel like it.

Then maybe the BBWAA should consider raising the number of votes they are allowed to give each year.

When the Hall started, there were 16 teams in all of MLB. There are now 30 teams, which means nearly twice as many players on the day-to-day 25-man roster, let alone the expanded 40-man roster.

A widely expanded roster of potential players should, in turn, raise the limit from 10 players per ballot to probably 15 or 20.

That would get rid of a lot of the horseshite vote-trading where people vote to keep a guy on the ballot rather than vote for a different guy whom they figure will be getting in anyway.
