Despite calls for him to start in left field to keep his bat in the lineup full time, Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber will stick with pinch-hitting duty during World Series games in Wrigley Field.

Schwarber had been cleared to hit and run the bases and played designated hitter for Games 1 and 2 in Cleveland, but doctors did not clear him to play the field, team president Theo Epstein said Thursday. Epstein said Schwarber tried to state his case, but the team is looking out for his long-term interests.

I could see him coming in as a Pinch Hitter late in the game but not taking the field.

This is a good thing. I'd rather him have to pinch hit than get 2 or 3 hits out of his bat before his knee shatters in the field and he's gone forever.

I'm ok with that... I think he is more of a liability in left than an asset at the plate right now.

He will still be the number 1 pinch hitter.

Would be funny if Maddon pulled some crazy shite and put him at 1st and Rizzo in the OF

Admittedly I'm no doctor, but if he's cleared to run the bases I'd think he'd be able to play in the outfield.

Wrigley is hosting its first WS game since 1945, but Schwarber pinch hitting one time will make the stadium come unglued.

Too bad baseball doesn't have offense/defense subs like basketball. Heyward/Schwarber would be pretty ridiculous.

I can't bring myself to feel pity for him. That contract is huge. Him wilting under its pressure is a total him problem.

Hopefully the staff and him work on hitting from Nov-April... Amazing how much he has dropped off offensively.

Yeah i understand he has a big contract, but its gotta be tough to realize that you are pretty much useless offensively at this point. I hope he can turn it around next year. He is a fantastic defender, but a total mess at the plate

consider base running is a straight line. in the OF he may have to make a cut, sudden stops. Also consider he prob isnt 100%, and he was a bad OF to begin with. I dont think we really want him in the OF with the wind that is projected to be in Chicago this weekend

I would think the lateral movement would be the concern in the outfield. Plus they are more than covered defensively as far as outfield goes.

Heyward fielding will still be valuable. He made some good contact last night so it's not the worst news.

Plus the Indians have to take out Napoli or Santana out of their lineup
